Denton DV-502 Vacuum Evaporator
Denton DV-502 Vacuum Evaporator: An instrument that is used to coat samples by evaporating carbon (for X-ray microanalysis) or heavy metals, such as gold/palladium (for shadowed preparations for TEM), in a high vacuum.

DuPont/Sorvall MT2-B Ultramicrotomes
DuPont/Sorvall MT2-B Ultramicrotomes :
An instrument that is used to cut sections or slices of specimens embedded in epoxy resin for examination by light or electron microscopy. The ultramicrotome uses a glass knife to cut 1.0 µm thick sections that are mounted on to a glass slide for examination in a light microscope. A diamond knife is used to cut very thin sections, approximately 70-90 nm in thickness, that are collected on a 3 mm diameter copper grid for observation in the TEM.

Beseler 45 MXT Enlarger and photographic darkroom

Beseler 45 MXT Enlarger and photographic darkroom:
The sheet film for capturing TEM images are loaded in film cassettes in the darkroom and dried in a dessicator before being introduced into the vacuum of the electron microscope. After examination and photography of specimens, the exposed film is removed from the microscope and developed in racks holding 25 negatives. The Beseler enlarger is capable of producing high quality photographic prints from a wide variety of negative sizes including 35 mm, 3.25 x 4 in., and 4 x 5 in. (Polaroid). The production of high quality images is extremely important when submitting research reports for publication.
