2130 local time (EDT +6 hrs)
Today's Weather: sunny, very windy in PLN, about 60 deg. F

My first full day on ship involved getting used to the time change. We left port at 0900 local time. The wind was really blowing (around 40 knots); once we hit the sea the ship began to roll but in a rhythmic way. We are transiting to our first station, designated T-1, and hope to arrive by 0700 tomorrow. It is located about 300 nautical miles SSW from PLN, between the Balearic Islands and the west coast of Sardinia. We had a safety meeting for the science party this morning. Discussed life jackets, man overboard procedures, fire drills, and abandon ship drill. I was videotaped donning a survival suit. When it is put on correctly it is difficult to breathe. However, I had fun doing it. During the safety meeting, I found myself having a hard time staying awake. I told Pat Kelly I was going to sleep for an hour, which turned into five hours. When I woke, I help Pat and other in the wet lab, mixing up solutions that will be used in coming days. After dinner, I spent some time on the bridge talking to the captain and chief mate. They are all good people on this ship. I do think that the cook has the hardest job of all. He goes almost non-stop from 0600 to 2000 every day.

Best regards,

Mr. Vincelette
