"RITAS gave me a different insight into the nature of science and science teaching.”

TTeacher: Doug Wilson
School: Exeter-West Greenwich high school, Exeter, RI
Expedition Title: Yellowtail Flounder Tracking in Northern Georges Bank
Expedition Dates: September 21-26, 2005
Chief Scientist: Tom Rossby

An educator for 13 years, Doug Wilson currently teaches physics, chemistry, astronomy, and general science at Exeter-West Greenwich High School. Doug’s special interest is in using physical science to explain events in the natural world, such as weather phenomenon, global warming, and water pollution. Bringing these concepts to his classroom shows his students that science is important and relevant. His fascination with the natural world is manifested in his bird watching hobby, by his concern of decreasing fish stocks, as well as by his memberships in the National Wildlife Federation and Nature Conservancy. Furthermore, Doug coordinates cleanup events in his area and has been testing the water quality of the Black Stone River as a volunteer for the River Rescue Project. The Rhode Island Teacher at Sea (RITAS) program is another experience Doug can bring to his students to get them involved in the real world of science.
