Joanne Greenleaf, an educator for 13 years, currently teaches biology and general science at Central Falls High School. Joanne’s primary goal is to get students involved in science and help them understand their relationship with the natural world. Her classes include Applied Bio-Chemistry, a course that is an outreach program of Save the Bay and focuses on fieldwork with aquatic systems and other environmental issues. Joanne has participated in research programs that involve her students and complement her fieldwork efforts in the classroom, including Phone Call To The Deep, during which Joanne’s class was chosen to converse with crew members on the ship R/V Atlantis and down to Alvin, an underwater submersible, at hydrothermal vents. Her students have also participated in Earthwatch Institute programs. Joanne’s participation in the Rhode Island Teacher at Sea (RITAS) program has provided her with a greater degree of field experience ad techniques that will benefit her students during their own fieldwork.
