Kathleen Barden has been an educator for 21 years, the last seven years as a teacher at Guiteras Elementary School in the Bristol-Warren school district. Currently she is teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) and is the ESL coordinator for the district. One of Kathleen’s most noteworthy projects was to institute marine science as a theme for the school to use as a base for literacy. After receiving a grant to build an underwater observation platform to study the Bristol Harbor habitat she wrote and received another grant to provide early elementary students experience in exploring the local shoreline and tide pools. Today the marine science theme is reflected throughout Guiteras Elementary School from the ceramic sea creatures at the school’s entry to the literature being discussed in each of the classrooms.
