Teacher: Timothy Stahl

Expedition Title: Investigation of the Dynamics and Transfer of Materials - Cruise 2
Expedition Dates: February 18-28, 2007
Chief Scientists: David Ullman

"Working with both the Science team and Ship's crews were fantastic. Everyone went to great lengths to explain the science we were doing, and the instruments used on the expedition. Being an active participant in the research, rather than just being an observer along for the ride, gave me the insight needed to share the expedition with my students. They were very interested in learning about my
experiences on board, and being able to share my photos, video, and personal log, in almost real time via email, has made the trip come alive for them."

Tim Stahl is a 9th grade Advisor at the Metropolitan Career and Technical Center (The Met), a progressive high school in Providence, Rhode Island. The Met is known for having an internship-based, highly individualized curriculum. Tim earned a Bachelor of Science in Geology and a Master of Arts in Education degree, both from the University of Rhode Island.

Tim's passion for science extends to his work at Ecotones, Inc., an environmental consulting firm in North Kingstown, where he specializes in construction phase monitoring of Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans. He has also worked for Epoch Well Logging offshore in the Gulf of Mexico on an
exploratory oil drilling rig, where he was responsible for analyzing rock cuttings for traces of oil and monitoring the rig's computer analysis systems. In addition, Tim has been a part of the Southern Rhode Island Collaborative Education and Training Center (SORICO) for the past six years, serving at a program manager, assistant, and educator.

His interests in geology have taken him on three trips to the Colorado Plateau to study the geology of the Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest, Canyon DeChelley and Monument Valley with Dr. David Fastovsky of the URI Department of Geology, and to the pegmatite gem mines of Maine with Dr. Michael Wise of the Smithsonian Institution Department of Mineral Sciences.

Tim's teaching career is not limited to his work at The Met. He has also been a sailing instructor for the 12 years. Tim was excited about the opportunity to work with the RITAS program, which helped him bring real-world experiences into his classroom, by providing his students with a glimpse of life as a research scientist. Tim hopes his experiences will inspire his students.
