Alexandri graduated in Geology from the University of Patras in
Greece in 1983, and received a Master of Science in Oceanography
from the University of Athens in 1988. She has worked at the Department
of Geology & Marine Geophysics, of the Hellenic Centre for
Marine Research in Greece since 1987. She has participated in
more than 30 research cruises and several research projects involving,
marine seismic reflection studies, marine gravity and magnetic
surveys in Aegean Sea, multibeam bathymetry and deep-tow side-scan
sonar studies. Her main field of interest includes the detailed
mapping of the sea-bottom and sea-floor type identification via
acoustic backscattering. Moreover, she enjoys the development
of algorithms and mathematical techniques for enhancing features
- structures, and extracting information from geophysical and
remote sensing data. She has specialized in the synergy of multi-frequency
deep-tow sidescan sonar data, multibeam swath data and coincident
acoustic imagery for sea floor type identification, in regions
of the Mediterranean ridge that have been affected by tectonic
activity, mud diapirism and dissolution of evaporites which locally
produces brine lakes. She has the main responsibility for the
operation of the multibeam system on the R/V AEGAEO, and has successfully
organized several research cruises for the detailed mapping of
the sea bottom in selected areas in the Aegean sea and Eastern
Mediterranean.
