Kolumbo
submarine volcano is situated just to the north-east of Thera,
and it erupted in 1650. We have discovered that there are about
twenty other volcanic cones to the north-east of Kolumbo, forming
a line of volcanoes.
This is an important discovery and it shows that the Thera volcanic
field is much larger than thought previously. The figure above
shows a seismic profile across one of these new cones, which we
hope to explore further with the Max-Rover ROV in the next few
days.
