The
R/V Aegaeo cruise ends this morning, and at 8 am we get off
the ship at the little harbor of Amoudhi on Santorini (Thera),
with a
load of core
samples, samples collected during the ROV dives and our computers
filled
with data files from 936 km of seismic surveys of the ocean floor
around
the volcano. Our next expedition, on the R/V Endeavor, does not
begin
until 30. May, and we settle down for three weeks in a small
house in the
village of Akrotiri to work on processing and interpretation
of all the
data that we have collected. In addition, we will spend some
of the days
studying the volcanic deposits of Santorini on dry land for a
change.
