Thera Expedition Log: 6/01/06

ROV diving shift from the east blocks to the crater of Kolumbo volcano located about 7 km northeast of Thera. Hercules descended directly into the crater and explored along the floor at about 500 meters depth. Spectacular outcrops of volcanic rock occurred along the slopes of the crater as the ROV ascended from the crater floor to the crater rim. Excellent samples of fresh and altered volcanic rock were collected from the crater wall and a few push cores were collected on the crater floor. The weather has been great and perfect for diving, very calm seas. The plan for later today is to do another dive inside of Kolumbo.
