Frequently Asked Questions

URI has partnered with Higher One, a financial services company, to help with the delivery of student refunds. If you are new to this service, it’s only natural that you may have some questions. So, we’ve put together answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about Higher One, the options for receiving refunds from URI, and the URI Refund Card.

You can learn more about your URI Refund Card at:

Who is Higher One?

Higher One is a company started in 2000 by three college students who believed in a better way to help students receive and manage money. Since the beginning, they have strived to offer more choices and better value to those in school and beyond. In addition to faster ways to receive refunds from URI, they also offer innovative checking account choices and a wealth of great features designed to make your life easier.

How will I get a URI Refund Card?

You will receive your enrollment packet and card in the mail at your home address on file with URI. Just look for the bright green envelope to arrive in your mailbox after orientation. Once you have received it, simply log in to with your personal code, review your refund delivery choices, and make your selection.

What if I never received my URI Refund Card?

Simply log on to and use the "Where's my Card?" self help feature for a real time status update on your card.

What are my options for receiving money?

  • Activation of your URI Refund Debit Card.  Money will be received the same business day funds are released by URI.
  • Deposit to another bank account. Money will be received in two to three business days.
  • Paper check issued by Higher One and sent by mail.

What if I don't make a selection?

Although you might not currently expect money from URI, you may receive money back in the future. After all, you may drop a class, make an over payment, or simply receive assistance you did not expect. Making a selection now ensures you'll always have this money without a delay.

Why is the MasterCard logo on my card?

If you choose to open a Higher One checking account, the URI Refund Card can be used to make purchases wherever Debit MasterCard is accepted. It is important to note that the URI Refund Card is NOT A CREDIT CARD, but rather a DEBIT CARD backed by the purchasing power of the MasterCard network.

Can I change my preference for receiving money from URI?

Yes. Just log in to your account and select "Refund Preferences" from the "Refund" menu option. Once on the page, simply make your new selection and click the "Update Preference" button to complete the process. Be aware that your new selection will only impact future money you receive from URI.

How will I know when my money has been sent?

Higher One will send you an email to the address you entered during setup. You can also view the status online at or sign up to receive text messages sent directly to your cell phone with convenient Mobile Alerts.

What is CIP and why do I have to submit my ID?

The Customer Identification Program (CIP) is an ID verification process. According to the USA Patriot Act, Federal banking regulations require all financial institutions to obtain, verify, and record the identity of their accountholders.

Higher One complies with these requirements by asking you to send them legible copies of your identification documents. For additional information on what documents you are required to send, please log into your profile at and review the information on the homepage.

For your convenience, there are a few different ways to Submit your ID. Once your documentation has been reviewed, Higher One will notify you by email to let you know if any further action is needed.

Where are the Higher One ATMs located on campus?

Hope Commons – 19 Butterfield Road

Mackal Field House Lobby – 75 Keaney Road
