What is a 1098-T form?
The 1098-T form is used by educational institutions to report information about their students to the IRS as required by the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997. Institutions are required to submit the student’s name, address, social security number, and enrollment/academic status. Institutions must also report amounts pertaining to qualified tuition and related expenses, as well as scholarships and grants. A 1098-T form must be provided to each applicable student. The form is informational only and serves to alert students that they may be eligible for federal income tax credits or deductions. It should not be considered as tax opinion or advice. There is no IRS requirement that you must claim an education tax credit or deduction. Claiming education tax benefits is a voluntary decision for those who may qualify.
By January 31st of each year, the University must provide a 1098-T form to all students who had qualified tuition and related expenses billed to them during the previous calendar year. URI has contracted with a company called ECSI to print and mail our 1098-T forms. Receipt of the form does not indicate eligibility for a tax credit or deduction. To determine the amount of qualified tuition and related expenses that were paid, and the amount of scholarships and grants received, a taxpayer should use their own financial records. NOTE: The University cannot provide tax advice. It is the responsibility of each taxpayer to determine eligibility for credits/deductions and how to calculate them.
The IRS instructs institutions to report either payments received (Box 1) or amounts billed (Box 2) for qualified tuition and related expenses on the 1098-T form. URI reports qualified tuition and related expenses that were billed in the previous calendar year in Box 2. Therefore, Box 1 will be blank.
Qualified tuition and related expenses include tuition, registration fees, student services fees, lab/clinical fees, program fees, etc. Examples of non-qualified expenses include housing fees, meal plan fees, health services fees, acc/sick insurance fees, late payment fees, etc.
While it is a good starting point, the 1098-T, as designed and regulated by the IRS, does not contain all of the information needed to claim a tax credit or deduction. Some information must come from the student’s personal financial records of what was paid during the calendar year. Detailed account information for each semester is available to students online via e-campus.
Please contact URI Enrollment Services (401-874-9500) if your social security number is incorrect. You will be asked to provide a copy of your social security card which we will use to update your URI student record. We will then contact ECSI to update the 1098-T record with the correct social security number.
If you did not receive a 1098-T form due to a change of address, or you misplaced the form, you can print a duplicate from the ECSI website at www.ecsi.net/1098t . You will need the school code (IY), your account number (SSN), and your ECSI PIN number. This information was included on your 1098-T form and should be retained for future reference. (If you are a continuing student and have received 1098-T forms in the past, please note that your PIN remains the same from year to year.)
