Grants & Scholarships


Federal Pell Grants

These federally funded grants are awarded to needy students. The amount of your Pell Grant is based on the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) noted on your Student Aid Report, the cost of attendance, and your enrollment status.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants

These grants are for undergraduates with exceptional financial need, that is, students with the lowest expected family contribution. Priority is given to students who receive Federal Pell Grants.

University Grants

The University provides funds for grants to several hundred students. Awards are made to students with satisfactory academic records and demonstrated financial need. You must file a FAFSA to be eligible for these grants.

URI Foundation Loan Funds, Scholarships, and Awards
The University has many grants/scholarships provided by organizations, corporations, and alumni. Funding levels may vary from year to year. Most scholarships are chosen by the academic department and/or the Enrollment Services office if there is a financial need restriction. If you have any questions regarding a particular scholarship, please email Enrollment Services or contact the department directly.


National SMART Grant

(Science and Mathematics to Retain Talent)

The National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant, also known as the National Smart Grant is available during the third and fourth years of undergraduate study to full-time students who are eligible for the Federal Pell Grant and who are majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security.

Academic Competitiveness Grant

This is available for the first time for the 2006-2007 school year for first year students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2006, and for second year students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2005.

TEACH Grant

The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education grant program provides grants for students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families.
