    Supervisor Brochure

Additional information can be found on our website at the following link:
    www.uri.edu/internships/employers

  2. When do internship begin and end and how many hours per week can an intern work?

Timeframes for internships follow the academic calendar. Typically, students are available to intern September - December, January - May, and May - July. However, there may be other experiential opportunities that may not follow the academic calendar exactly. Be sure to contact an Experiential Education Coordinator about your opportunity. For more information visit the GUIDELINES section in this portal.

  3. Do I have to pay an intern?

It is important for employers to be aware of the Department of Labor’s standards and to follow the Fair Labor Standards Act. Here is a list of the guidelines:

The Department of Labor holds that if all six of the following conditions are met, the student is not considered an employee and not entitled to at least minimum wage and overtime:
    • The training, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is similar to that which would be given in a vocational school.
    • The training is for the benefit of the trainees.
    • The trainees do not displace regular employees, but work under close observation.
    • The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the trainees, and on occasion his operations may actually be impeded.
    • The trainees are not necessarily entitled to a job at the completion of the training period.
    • The employer and the trainees understand that the trainees are not entitled to wages for the time spent training.

  4. How can I advertise my internship opportunity? The Office of Career Services manages the online database for student employment and internship opportunities. The link to the site is:

http://career.uri.edu. Click on the RHODYNET icon on the left panel under “Employer." The site will walk you through your steps to complete a job/internship posting.

  5. What should I put in my advertisement to entice students to apply?

Students want to apply what they have learned in the classroom. The more significant projects they can engage in, the more enticing the opportunity will be. Also, students are inclined to apply for opportunities that offer a wage first. If you cannot offer a wage, then you might want to offer a stipend to help offset expenses for travel. Other incentives for students are the opportunity for employment upon completion of the internship. Importantly, the student needs to be gaining solid skill sets during the internship. 7. What is my role in the internship process?

Internship site supervisors are asked to provide student interns with a safe working environment that includes all the necessary tools to perform the job. We also ask internship site supervisors to provide ongoing supervision and mentoring for the student. Finally, we ask internship site supervisors to evaluate students on their performance twice during the semester and provide the student with concrete, constructive feedback.
