Mary Brennan joined the URI Facilities Services Department as Recycling and Solid Waste Coordinator in 2010. She was previously employed in the Campus Planning and Design Department at the University. She began her recycling career in 1988 working for the Rhode Island Solid Waste Corporation (now RIRRC), when Rhode Island was the first state in the nation to require mandatory recycling. These early efforts can be seen in the robust recycling program that the state of Rhode Island enjoys today. She is a strong proponent of the 3 R's - Reduce, Re-use and Recycle, and believes that all members of the URI community should be engaged in the pursuit of a sustainable economy, a healthy ecosystem, and an environmentally just society. Mary is proud of the fact that URI recycled 52% of its waste stream last year and looks forward to improving this rate into the future.
You can find Mary talking trash in her office at the Wakefield House, biking to meetings around campus, or picking up litter on her lunchtime walks.
