Frequently Asked Questions

How can I get recycling bins in my office / dorm / classroom / etc.?

The University of Rhode Island purchased recycling bins that are color-coded to correspond with our recycling program. URI Recycling has an ongoing process to systematically review every building, room and waste containers on its four campuses (Kingston, Providence, Narragansett Bay, and W. Alton Jones). After each review, new recycling bins are purchased that meet the volume and content of the waste stream found in the studied location. If further assiatnce is needed please contact us at: 401-874-2840 or at: recycle@etal.uri.edu

I want to help improve recycling at URI. What can I do?

Just set a good example by recycling all you can. Educate others in the benefits of recycling, reduce your waste, and reuse whenever possible.

Why recycle?

Recycling preserves our natural resources: not just raw materials like metal ore and tree pulp, but also the electricity and water required to process these materials. Recycling prevents us from burying our resources in landfills by keeping materials in circulation. For more information go to the "Why Recycle" link.

What can be recycled at URI?

At the University of Rhode Island, we collect our recyclable materials in two streams, each identified by a color. GREEN bins for PAPER, BLUE bins for CANS & BOTTLES and GRAY bins for Non-Recyclables. A more detailed list can be seen in the "What can be recycled" link.
