Annual Report

Honors Program and Visiting Scholars Committee

2007-2008

During the past year Honors has been in temporary quarters in Roger Williams Hall while Lippitt Hall has been under construction. Honors is currently scheduled to re-open in Lippitt on September 29 with the ribbon cutting ceremony on October 8 at 12:00. I want to thank Bob Weygand, Paul DePace, Bob Schultz, Tom Frisbie-Fulton, Jerry Sidio, Tom Dougan and their staffs for help in both our exile and return. Special thanks are due to Ryan Carrillo who responded to many requests and complaints with humor and creativity.

As always the Honors Colloquium was our major public offering last year. Professor Timothy George, History and Professor Yan Ma, Library and Information Studies coordinated the Colloquium, on the topic of "China Rising." Presenters included Jonathan Spence, David Sanger, Orville Schell, Lien Chan, Xu Wenli, Albert Verrechia, Paul Zhang, Peng Xiaolin, Robert Ross. Topics included China's rise in the light of history, national security considerations, environmental and economic aspects of China's rise, the politics of Taiwan and the Chinese film industry. There were overflow crowds on many nights in Chafee 271 and the accompanying textile and photography exhibits were also well received. All told there were roughly 8,000 participants.

The highlight of the year on the honors student side was an end-of-year daylong undergraduate research conference featuring forty-eight senior honors projects, and fifty-one seniors completing the Honors Program, all of whom were honored at the annual Spring Honors Convocation.

The Honors Program continued to offer a wide range of stimulating Honors courses, promote scholarship opportunities, sponsor undergraduate research projects, and provide financial support for noted scholars to come to URI for special presentations to students, faculty, and the public. I would like to especially thank Ms. Deborah Gardiner who manages the Honors Office with consummate professionalism.

A brief informational report describing specific activities of the Committee for 2007-2008 follows.

A. Eligibility Standards for 2007-2008

The standards of eligibility for students to participate in Honors Program course work continue to be the same: Freshmen must have graduated in the top 10% of their high school class or present a letter of recommendation from their principal or guidance counselor. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors must have earned a 3.2 GPA. Under special circumstances, these requirements may be modified with permission of the Director.

A new initiative in summer 2008 was a partnership between Honors and Talent Development in which two freshmen honors courses were offered as part of the summer pre-matriculation program. We are evaluating the results.

B. Courses and Enrollment

During the Fall, 2007 semester, the Program offered thirty-seven Honors courses in addition to Senior Honors Projects and Administrative Internships: twenty-one 100-level courses, the 200-level Colloquium, ten 300-level tutorials, and five 400-level Senior Seminars. In the Spring, 2008 semester we offered thirty-five Honors courses in addition to Senior Honors Projects and Administrative Internships: thirteen 100-level courses, the 200-level Colloquium, fifteen 300-level tutorials, and four 400-level Senior Seminars. Student enrollment in Honors classes was 560 during the Fall, 2007 semester and 436 students during the Spring, 2008 semester. These figures are based on post-drop mid-semester rosters. For Fall, 2008, thirty-nine Honors courses in addition to Senior Projects and Administrative Internships are being offered with 563 student registered as of September 2008.

The Honors Program office keeps a database of students who are participating in the Honors Program during their undergraduate years, which for 2007-2008 included the classes of 2008-2011. 808 registered URI undergraduates in these class years have participated in Honors courses during their undergraduate career, bringing the program above the national norm for participation involving at least one-fourth of Honors-eligible students in Honors course offerings.

We are consciously attempting to increase the disciplinary diversity of our course offerings. The colleges of Engineering and Business have significantly increased their participation in Honors and two faculty members of the Graduate School of Oceanography are coordinating the current Honors colloquium, "People and Planet: Global Environmental Change." The coordinators for Fall 2009 are drawn from the Colleges of Business Administration and Engineering and we are actively exploring increasing honors course offerings from the other professional schools while retaining our strong liberal arts base.

C. Faculty

Faculty from seven of the University's colleges, the Schmidt Labor Research Center, and the Center for Non-Violence and Peace Studies taught honors courses in 2007-08. See appendix A.

D.Honors Colloquium

In addition to financial support from the Honors Program, sponsors in support of the Fall, 2007 Honors Colloquium were:

Major Sponsors: URI Office of the President, Confucius Institute at URI, URI College of Business Administration, URI College of Engineering, URI Division of University Advancement.

Sponsors: The URI College of Arts & Sciences, URI College of Environment and Life Sciences, URI Division of Student Affairs, URI Multicultural Center, and Kenneth and Susan Kermes, Hon. '06.

Co-Sponsors: Robert L. Carothers and Jayne Richmond, URI Alumni Association, URI College of Human Science & Services, URI Office of the Provost, URI Division of Administration, URI University College, URI Women's Studies Program.

Friends: Timothy and Jane George; John Leo; Nancy Potter, Schmidt Labor Research Center; Art and Clare Sartori Stein; Gerry Tyler; John Hazen White Sr. Center for Ethics and Public Service; URI College of Nursing; URI Department of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering; URI Film Media Program; URI Golden Key Honors Society; URI International Engineering Program; URI Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development; URI Phi Beta Kappa; URI Phi Kappa Phi; URI Women's Center.

The URI Honors Colloquium has grown into a statewide and nationally recognized forum for contemporary issues demanding scholarly attention and debate. The URI News Bureau under the leadership of Linda Acciardo, Director of Communications, has succeeded in achieving public visibility and widespread coverage for the Colloquium. I would like to especially thank Jan Wenzel who is always prompt in responding to our needs. The Colloquium also is wonderfully supported by the URI Publications Office, which produces the copy and art work for the posters, flyers, and brochures. Thanks especially to Barbara Caron and Bo Pickard.

I thank the Fall 2007 Colloquium Coordinators, Professor Yan Ma, Library and Information Studies and Professor Timothy George, History for their time and creativity in conducting such an outstanding series of events and teaching the co-related Honors Colloquium class for 60 honors students.

The Fall 2008 Honors Colloquium, People and Planet: Global Environmental Change, kicked off on Sept.9, under the direction of Professor Steven D'Hondt, Oceanography, Professor Arthur Spivack, Oceanography, and Professor Judith Swift, Communication Studies.

For Fall 2009 the Honors Program and Visiting Scholars Committee has selected "Demystifying India" to be co-coordinated by Ruby Roy Dholakia, Professor of Marketing, Nikhilesh Dholakia, Professor of Marketing & International Business, and Arun Shukla, Simon Ostrach Professor of Mechanical Engineering.

A call for proposals for Fall 2010 will be distributed to the campus community after mid-semester this fall.

To accommodate student demand we sometimes offer a smaller spring colloquium. In Spring 2008 we offered "Novels of the Contemporary Extreme," coordinated by Profs. Alain Phillippe Durand from Modern Languages and Naomi Mandel from English. This colloquium featured a "writer in residence," Chris Cleave of London, who offered readings and workshops in both Kingston and Providence.

E. Awards and Endowment

We received a $69,690 grant from the Champlin Foundations for a one-stop, consolidated, state-of-the-art resource center to prepare students for awards, fellowships, competitive post-graduate positions, graduate school examinations, professional school admissions tests, research positions on campus and beyond, and other contests of an intellectual or creative character.

The money will be used to create a dedicated state-of-the-art computer center and on-line reference center in a quiet area for examination and application preparation, and an interview practice room that mimics those used for interviewing Rhodes, Marshall, Truman and other prestigious scholarship candidates. It will also serve as a centralized location for information about fellowships, research positions, summer opportunities, intellectual or creative contests, graduate testing and other opportunities for exceptional students. An administrative operations room will support these students' endeavors.

I thank Professors Cheryl Foster, Carolyn Hames, Walter von Reinhart and Judith Swift for their help with the preparation of this proposal.

Cash awards from the Grace B. Sherrer endowment were made to six outstanding senior Honors Program students. Awards are based on GPA, steady progress toward completion of the Honors Program, and additional noteworthy achievements. These were announced at the sixth annual Spring Honors Convocation on May 1, 2008: Meredith Carter (Nutrition and Dietetics), Daniel Cummings (Philosophy), Samantha Henneberry (Art History and Classical Studies), Rebecca Long (Philosophy), Maxwell Mathews (Computer Science), and Christie Moulton (Wildlife Conservation Biology).

The Honors Program has two endowed scholarships. The Paul I. Abell Memorial Honors Student Award provides financial support for travel and research expenses. It was awarded this past year to: Jami Halpern (Psychology), Holly Krohn (Biological Sciences and Anthropology), and Andrew Macquaide (African and African-American Studies; Writing and Rhetoric).

A new scholarship, the Amir and Angela Bozorgmir Honors scholarship will be awarded for the first time this coming year. We thank the Bozorgmirs for their generosity and Tom Zorabedian and former Honors director Galen Johnson for their help in securing this support.

The Honors program manages the The Eric F. Kumpf Memorial Humanities Honors Student Endowment in conjunction with the URI Center for the Humanities. The following students received Kumpf awards this year: Jeffrey Albanese (Anthropology & Political Science), Kalyana Champlain (Communication Studies), Daniel Cummings (Philosophy), Darren Medeiros (Philosophy), Mary Smith (English Literature & Philosophy), Alison Traver (Spanish), Kylie Tanner (Psychology & Film Studies), Amanda Redinger (Philosophy & English).

By agreement with the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Honors manages the Joan Irvine Smith and Athalie R. Clark Award for Environmental Research. The following students received this award in 2007-08: Laurina Leach (Biological Sciences), Rebecca Long (Philosophy), Rachel Wigton (Marine Biology)

The Honors program cooperates with the Research Office on the Undergraduate and Graduate Research Award. We thank Karen Markin and Peter Alfonso for their commitment to undergraduate research.

External support is increasingly important in providing needed services to URI's top students. The Honors Colloquium now has its first continuing support through the Mark and Donna Ross Honors Colloquium Humanities Endowment and the Thomas Silvia and Shannon Chandley Honors Colloquium Endowments. At present these endowments support a single lecture but we hope these are just the first in a series of gifts that eventually can support most of the events. More scholarship money for Honors students is also a critical need. We look forward to working with Foundation Director Glen Kerkian and his staff in these endeavors. We would also like to thank Tom Zorabedian and Dean Winnie Brownell for both their strategic and tactical help in developing new sources of funding for Honors.

F. Visiting Scholars

The HPVS Committee received requests for Visiting Scholar presentations for 2007-2008. Nine awards were made, totaling $4,128; these represented a range of departments, colleges, and disciplines. Although most of the grants are of necessity for small sums, their cultural and intellectual enhancement of the community is considerable. The Committee has provided co-sponsorship with several departments and programs. The Committee always encourages applicants to seek partial funding from other sources.

G. Senior Honors Projects

The Program sponsored fifty-two Senior Honors Projects (HPR401/402) during 2007-2008. Senior Honors Projects were presented at the sixth annual Honors Undergraduate Research Day on April 30, 2008. The student conference scheduled concurrent sessions throughout the day for humanities, social science, natural science, and professional college projects in Ballentine Hall. Each senior completing a project also contributed to a booklet of abstracts available in the Honors Center in Lippitt Hall. Associate Honors Director Professor Carolyn Hames has overall responsibility for senior research projects, and Professor Hames and Honors Program administrator Ms. Deborah Gardiner organized the conference.

The schedule for the conference with presenters, titles and faculty sponsors are listed in Appendix B. I thank Mark Higgins and the College of Business Administration for his generosity in letting us use their excellent facility.

The Honors Director expresses sincere appreciation to the faculty sponsors who devote their time to mentoring the senior honors students. Their contribution is more remarkable in that thirty-four of these faculty members were not teaching an honors course in 2007-2008. Together with the fifty-eight honors faculty teaching HPR courses, this brings the total number of faculty participating in the Honors Program during 2007-2008 to ninety-two (92).

H. Spring Honors Convocation

The annual Spring Honors Convocation was held on May 1, 2008 with Beverly Swan (Justin Smith Morrill Distinguished University Professor) as guest speaker, and included a luncheon. The Sherrer prizes were awarded (cf. section F above).

I. Honors Program and Visiting Scholars Committee

The members of the Honors Program and Visiting Scholars Committee during the past year were: Professor Mona Florea, University Library; Timothy George, History (ex officio, Co-Coordinator of the Honors Colloquium); Professor Richard McIntyre, Economics, (Director, Honors Program); Professor Gerry Tyler, Political Science; Professor Theodore Walls, Psychology; Professor Bryna Wortman, Theatre; Christopher Barrett (undergraduate student); Anna Siradze, undergraduate student; and Katiuska Perez, graduate student.

J. Honors Student and Faculty Initiatives

The Student Advisory Board was reconstituted and sponsored a number of social activities both on and off campus. These included an ice cream social and mocktails event in the Garrahy Apartments where the Honors Living, Learning Community is located, a bowling night at Old Mountain Lanes, and a day for National Honors Society students from Central Falls High School. The student-produced Honors newsletter has significantly increased the visibility of the program on campus. I thank Chris Barrett and Lisa McGunigle for their work on the newsletter.

For the first time we offered Honors Courses in Providence. Two courses were offered in Fall and three in Spring semester. We are monitoring the progress of this initiative.

A search was conducted for the new position of Assistant Director for National Fellowships and Academic Opportunities. Unfortunately, just as we got to the interview stage, the money for the position was frozen as part of the fiscal crisis. As we have been operating for two years now with the expectation of filling this position we have not made progress in our recruiting and grooming of national scholarship applicants. Acting National Scholarships director Walter von Reinhart and I are developing new initiatives this year to increase the visibility of this outstanding opportunity. We have asked all chairs to forward the names of their top sophomores and juniors. We will invite these students to an information session on the scholarship process in late October. We are also planning a workshop for faculty on writing letters of recommendation.
