At the Curricular Affairs Committee's meeting of October 29, 2001 the following matters were considered and are now presented to the Faculty Senate.

A. College of Arts and Sciences

1. Department of Art

a. CHANGE: Title for ART 304 to "Introduction to Computer Art I" and prerequisite to "Pre: 204."

b. CHANGE: Description for ART 309 to read as follows:

ART 309 Drawing III (3)

Further problems in drawing with emphasis on independent work. (Studio 6) Pre: 208 or permission of instructor.

2. Department of English

CHANGE: Prerequisite for ENG 205 by deleting the prerequisite.

3. Department of Mathematics

CHANGE: Prerequisite for MTH 362 to "Pre: 142."

4. Department of Physics

CHANGE: Description for PHY 306:

PHY 306 Elementary Modern Physics (3)

Introduction to relativistic and quantum physics: special relativity theory, structure of atoms, molecules, nuclei, and solids including semiconductor devices; wave and particle properties... (rest remains unchanged).

5. Department of Political Science and African and African American Studies Program

CHANGE: Number for AAF 370 to AAF 380 and cross-list as "AAF 380 (or PSC 380) Civil Rights Movement."

B. College of the Environment and Life Sciences

Department of Plant Sciences and Community Planning and Landscape Architecture

CHANGE: Expiration for PLS 350X (or LAR 350X) Control and Management of Flowering to permit a third offering in Spring 2002.

Curricular Matters that Require Confirmation by the Faculty Senate

A. College of Arts and Sciences

1. Department of Art

a. DELETE: ART 302 Projects in Studio II.

b. CHANGE: Curricular requirements for the B.F.A. in Art by adding 6 credits of ART on the 400-level as an alternative to ART 405 and 406.

c. CHANGE: Requirements for the B.A. in Studio Art by adding:

ART 301 may not be used toward the 33 credits required for the major.

2. Department of Biological Sciences

CHANGE: Level, number, title, description and method of instruction for BIO 204:

BIO 304 (204) Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy (4)

Anatomy of chordates emphasizing functional and evolutionary diversity. Lecture focuses on morphological variation and evolution. Laboratory focuses on comparative anatomy through dissections and models. (Lec. 3, Lab. 3) Pre: 101 and 102 or equivalent.

4. Department of Languages

CHANGE: Program requirements for the French major by replacing "a minimum of three credits from FRN 412, 473, or 474" to:

Select a minimum of six credits from 400-level French courses, three of which must be from FRN 412, 473, or 474.

B. College of the Environment and Life Sciences

Department of Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Science

a. ADD: The following courses:

1) AFS 102 Introductory Aquaculture (3)

Aquaculture and its historical development worldwide, its contribution to food supply, non-food species, methods of production, environmental and ecological considerations, culture practices employed for selected species, selective breeding, feeding, disease, processing and marketing. (Lec 3)

2) AFS 201 Shellfish Aquaculture (3)

Culture of marine and freshwater mollusks. Emphasis on life history, biological requirements, culture practices, and economic importance of major species used for human food or shell products. (Lec. 2, Lab. 3) Pre: 102 and one semester of general chemistry.

b. DELETE: The following courses:

1) AFS (ASP) 281 Introduction to Aquaculture (3)

2) AFS (ASP) 282 Introductory Aquaculture Simulation Laboratory (1)

3) AFS (ASP) 381 Shellfish Aquaculture (3)

C. College of Human Science and Services

a. CHANGE: Grading method for PEX 305 to "A-F."

At the October 29 meeting of the Curricular Affairs Committee and the November 16, 2001 meeting of the Graduate Council the following matters were considered and are now presented to the Faculty Senate.

A. Informational Matters

1. College of Arts and Sciences

a. Department of Art

CHANGE: Description and prerequisite for ART 405, 406:

ART 405, 406 Studio Seminar (3)

Intensive self-directed work under guidance of instructor. Periodic critiques and discussion of work of all participants. (Studio 6) Pre: Limited to senior B.A. and B.F.A. Studio Art Majors with 3.0 or above as studio course average and permission of instructor.

b. Department of Biological Sciences

CHANGE: Prerequisite for BIO 441 to "Pre: one physiology course."

c. Department of Communication Studies

1. CHANGE: Prerequisite for MGT 402 to "Pre: 301, 302 or COM 220 or permission of instructor" and cross-list as "MGT 402 (or COM 402) Leadership and Motivation."

*2. ADD: COM 431X Communication in Socio-Economic Issues (3)

Course focuses on examination, synthesis and communication of socio-economic issues in selected areas, e.g. social justice, globalization, and sustainability. Employing principles and concepts from both disciplines, students develop content-based media communication. (Lec. 3) Pre: Junior standing and permission of instructor(s). Not for graduate credit.

d. Department of Computer Science and Statistics-

CHANGE: Title, description and prerequisite for STA 413 to read as follows:

STA 413 Spatial Data Analysis (3)

Analysis of point patterns: visualizing, exploring and modeling, space time clustering, correcting for spatial variation, clustering around a specific point source. Analysis of spatially continuous data: variogram analysis and Kriging methods. (Lec. 3) Pre: An introductory statistics course such as 307 or 308 or 409.

e. Department of Physics

CHANGE: Description for the courses:

a) PHY 451 Introduction to Quantum, Mechanics (3)

Particle-wave duality, uncertainty principle; Schrodinger equation; eigenvalues; wavefunctions, time dependence; Dirac notation; Heisenberg representation; operators, matrices, eigenvectors; angular momentum; spin and polarization, Pauli matrices, hydrogen atom, application to quantum computation; symmetries: conservation laws, fermions and bosons. (Lec. 3) Pre: 306, 322, MTH 215 and 244.

b) PHY 452 Quantum Mechanics: Techniques and Applications (3)

Approximation techniques including time-dependent and time-independent perturbation theory, WKB, variational method, Born, Hartree, and computational techniques. Applications to atomic and molecular structure, model potentials, radiative transitions, and scattering.

f. Department of Political Science and African and African-American Studies Program

CROSS-LIST: AAF 415 as "AAF 415 (or PSC 415) Dynamics of Social Change in the Carribean."
