Molecular Biology
ADD: Microbiology/Biotechnology
option to the B.S. degree program in Microbiology:
Microbiology/Biotechnology option
The general education and basic science course
requirements for this option are those described above. Specific
course requirements for the microbiology/ biotechnology option are
MIC 190, MIC 211, MIC 333, BIO 341, BIO 437, MIC 413, MIC 415, MIC
499 and six additional credits of MIC or BCH. MIC 414, MIC 416 and
MIC 495 are not required for students pursuing this option.
Internships (MIC 499) in this program are
normally conducted with the cooperation of local members of the
biotechnology industry and may be pursued on a full or part time
basis. Students should be aware that internships may be limited in
number and are awarded on a competitive basis. Students interested in
this option should consult with their advisers early in their college
career.
2. Department of Fisheries, Animal and
Veterinary Sciences
ADD: The following courses:
1) AFS 120 Introduction to Fisheries

Introduction to international fishery issues,
practices, patterns, and public policy based on readings and
discussion in a tutorial setting. Concurrent registration in 121

Introduction to local fisheries and selected
nearshore fishery ecosystems; exposure to use and operation of
exemplary fishing and sampling gears in local fresh waters and

ADD: EVS 366 Communicating
Environmental Research and Outreach (2)
Value and techniques of communicating
scientific research and outreach efforts. Focus on technical and
communication skill development. Student must be engaged in a
personal research or outreach experience. (Seminar) Pre: Permission
of instructor; by override only.
C. College of Human Science and
Services

ADD: The following new paragraph
between "Repeating Courses for Credit" and "Transfer
Students:"
Curricular Modifications. In consultation with
the advisor and with the approval of the department chairperson and
or appropriate unit chairperson, a student will be permitted to
modify the normal requirements of the department in which the student
is majoring. The decision of the department or unit chair is final.
Requirements outside the major may be modified only with approval of
the Scholastic Standing Committee of the College of Human Science and
Services. Petition forms are available in the Office of the Dean.
Minimum quality point average and total credit requirements are not
petitionable.
2. Department of Human Development and Family
Studies
a. CHANGE: Description of Joint
Dental Hygiene Program by replacing paragraph 8 to read as
follows:
In accordance with URI regulations, at least
half (63) of the required 125 credits must be earned at a four-year
institution. Program requirements for entry to the CCRI Dental
Hygiene Program include successful completion of the following
courses: BIO 121; DHY 100; WRT 101; Math (any URI general education
math); CHM 103, 105 and CHM 124, 126. Other requirements include CPR
certification (American Heart Association healthcare provider card),
hepatitis B vaccination, and a cumulative grade point average of 2.00
or better.
b. ADD: The following new courses (formerly
specific topics under HDF 298 or HDF 498):
1) HDF 190 First Year Leaders Inspired to
Excellence (2)
Leadership development course focusing on
leadership theories, personal and academic adjustment issues, civic
leadership and community service and basic communication skills. Core
requirement for the minor in leadership studies (Lec. 2) Concurrent
enrollment in URI 101.
2) HDF 290 Modern Leadership Issues (3)
Introductory leadership class. Topics include
basic leadership theories, international governance/economic systems,
critical thinking, and leadership in: US education; community service
organizations; families; diverse workplaces. Core option for the
leadership studies minor. (Lec. 3)
3. Department of Textiles, Fashion
Merchandising and Design
a. CHANGE: Description of
requirements for transferring to the Textile Marketing major:
Freshmen who complete minimum of 27 credits
with an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher and who complete
BAC 110 and 120 (or their equivalents CSC 101 and MTH 131) with a 'B'
or higher will be admitted to the College of Human Science and
Services at the end of the freshman year. Students who have a minimum
of 42 credits; a grade point average of 2.40 or higher, and who have
successfully (with an average of 2.40 or higher) completed BAC 110,
120, 201 (or their equivalents CSC 101, MTH 131, STA 308), ACC 201
and ECN 201 after the first semester of the sophomore year will be
admitted to the College of Human Science and Services. Students not
meeting these requirements may be eligible to transfer to TMD.
b. CHANGE: Description of Art minor to
read:
Students with an interest in apparel design or
interior design should consider a minor in art. The requirements for
an Art minor are determined by the Art Department, and consist of 18
credits of any Art or Art History courses, 12 credits of which must
be at the 200 level or above. The overall URI requirements for a
minor apply (see page X). Courses particularly appropriate to TMD can
be determined by consultation with TMD and Art faculty.
c. CHANGE: Description of requirements for
transferring into Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design:
Students must have completed 24 credits, have
an overall 2.0 gpa, and have completed CHM 103, 105, TMD 103 and the
general education mathematics requirement with a 2.0 average to
transfer to the College of Human Science and Services. (The same
requirements apply to students wishing to transfer into TMD from
other majors.)

5. Simultaneous Courses
ADD: The following new section
8.30.20 to the UNIVERSITY MANUAL:
8.30.20 Simultaneous
Courses. Departments may offer courses
at the 400-level and 500-level taught simultaneously to both
undergraduates and graduate students. In such a case students must
register for the course under either its 400 number or its 500
number. For approval at two levels course proposals must demonstrate
appropriate differences to the satisfaction of both the Curricular
Affairs Committee and the Graduate Council. To be approved at both
levels courses must differ substantially in requirements and
expectations of students. Assignments, examinations, projects and
analyses should require a greater depth of understanding,
sophistication and skills for students registered under the 500
number than for those registered under the 400 number.
