Four Hundred Sixteenth Report

During the summer and at the September 29, 2003 meeting of the Curricular Affairs Committee, the following matters were considered and are now presented to the Faculty Senate.

S E C T I O N I

Informational Matters

A. College of Arts and Sciences

1. Department of Art

CHANGE: Description for ART 304 and ART 306 by adding "May be repeated once for credit with permission of instructor."

2. Department of Economics

ADD: ECN 398X Economy, Ecology and Society (3)

The role of the complex interaction among economic, social and ecological forces in the rise and disintegration of complex societies and in the current global ecological crisis. (Lec. 3) Pre: 100, 201, or 202.

3. Department of Mathematics

ADD: MTH 110X Mathematical Foundations for Business Analysis (3)

Designed to strengthen math background for BAC 120. Equations, inequalities; polynomial and rational expressions; exponentials and logarithms. Introduction to linear algebra and spreadsheets. Business applications emphasized. Pre: passing a placement test. Not for credit for mathematics majors and not for general education credit.

4. Department of Psychology

ADD: PSY 255X Health Psychology (3)

Investigates the relationship between behavior and health, introduces the most important theories of behavior change, and explores specific behaviors and behavior change strategies from an individual and public health perspective. (Lec. 3)

B. College of Engineering

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

a.ADD: CVE 001X Fundamentals of Engineering - Civil Discipline (0)

Surveying, structural analysis and design, soil mechanics and hydrologic systems, environmental engineering, water purification and treatment, transportation facilities, computers and numerical methods, construction management, and legal and professional aspects.

b. CHANGE: Title for CVE 334 to "Construction Management."

c. CHANGE: Description for CVE 354 by deleting "and design" from the first sentence.

C. College of the Environment and Life Sciences

Department of Natural Resources Science

ADD: NRS 307X Applied Ecology (4)

Applications of ecology to environmental problems. Laboratory sessions explore cases studies in the field and using computer simulations. (Lec. 2, Lab. 4) Pre: 223 or BIO 262 or permission of instructor.

D. College of Human Science and Services

Department of Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design

CHANGE: Title and description for TMD 224 as follows:

TMD 224 Culture, Dress and Appearance (3)

Analysis of social, psychological and cultural factors in the creation, maintenance and use of human appearance. Focus on dress and appearance as a communication system from cross-cultural and international perspectives. (Lec. 3)

*Approved previously. Inadvertently retained in 2003-04 Catalog.

B. College of the Environment and Life Sciences

Department of Plant Sciences

**CHANGE: Name of major in Urban Horticulture and Turf grass Management (RD 228 BOS degree) to "Environmental Horticulture and Turf grass Management."

**May require action by the Board of Governors.

C. College of Human Science and Services

Department of Human Development and Family Studies

CHANGE: Grading method for HDF 180 from "S/U" to "A-F" effective for the spring semester 2004.

D. College of Pharmacy

Doctor of Pharmacy Degree

CHANGE: The communication general education requirement to read as follows:

One course in Writing and one course in Oral Communication.

Report on 400-Level Courses

The Curricular Affairs Committee considered the following matters during the summer and on September 29, 2003. The courses are not for graduate credit and action by the Graduate Council is not required.

Department of Art

CHANGE: Description for ART 404 by adding "May be repeated once with permission of the instructor and department chairperson."

2. College of the Environment and Life Sciences

a. Department of Cell and Molecular Biology

CHANGE: Title for MIC 405 to "Molecular Pathology."

b. Department of Natural Resources Science

ADD: NRS 456X Tropical Marine Conservation (5)

Conservation of tropical coral reef, mangrove, sea grass and shoreline habitats. Laboratory sessions focus on field surveys and research techniques. (Lec. 3, Lab. 8, Lab taught in Virgin Islands) Pre: 223 or BIO 262 and permission of instructor; SCUBA certification recommended.

3. College of Nursing

CHANGE: Prerequisite for NUR 433 by adding "Pre: 334 and 344, previous or concurrent enrollment in 453."
