Report #2000-01-2
Final Exams - Spring 2001
The Academic Standards and Calendar Committee met on 7 December
2000 and unanimously passed the following change to the University
Calendar for Spring 2001. This change is now presented to the Faculty
Senate for confirmation.
Add Saturday, 5 May, to the Final Exam Schedule for
the Spring 2001 semester.*
Final Examinations would be scheduled for May 4-5, 7-11.
Final grades due in Registrar's Office by 4:00 p.m. on May 14.
Commencement: May 20.
BACKGROUND
o
The Scheduling Office requested an additional day for exams.
Because of the growing number of late-afternoon class periods,
combined with classrooms out of service, it is impossible to schedule
enough exam periodsin the current Exam Period.
o
It was noted that there was precedent for scheduling exams on
a Saturday. After discussing the matter, the committee concluded that
it would be more problematic to add Monday, May 14, than Saturday.
o
The Scheduling Office assured the committee that it would
schedule the Saturday exams so as to affect the least number of
people.
o
The Scheduling Office also will continue to accommodate
faculty for whom a Saturday exam would create a conflict, e.g. for
religious reasons

*NOTE: This change requires an
exception to section 8.70.23 of the University Manual, which
states that "Saturdays and Sundays may not be used as final
examination days."
