At the Curricular Affairs Committee's meeting of February 11, 2002 the following matters were considered and are now presented to the Faculty Senate.

S E C T I O N I

College of Arts and Sciences

1. Department of History and African and African American Studies Program

CROSS-LIST: The following courses:

1) HIS 366 as HIS 366 (or AAF 366) "Black Political Thought During the Age of Civil Rights and Black Power (3)"

2) HIS 367 as HIS 367 (or AAF 367) "Contemporary African-American Political Thought (3)"

2. Department of Music

a. CHANGE: descripton for the following courses:

1) MUS 110 Applied Music (1-3) ... last sentence to read: "Music convocation performance is encouraged but not required."

2) MUS 310 Applied Music (1-3) ... last sentence to read: "More credit requires additional preparation time, higher levels of performance and junior level or music convocation performance."

b. CHANGE: Prerequisite for MUS 222 to "Pre: 225 or equivalent competency and 221 or consent of instructor."

Curricular Matters that Require Confirmation by the Faculty Senate

College of Arts and Sciences

1. Department of Biological Sciences

ADD: BIO 360 Marine Biology (4)

The nature of plants and animals of the sea. Diversity of species and adaptations to habitats from the sea surface to the depths of the ocean. (Lec. 3, Lab. 3) Pre: 101, 102.

2. Department of History

ADD: HIS 351 History of Women in Medicine (3)

Examines the history of women healers, including midwives, nurses, and physicians. Topics in women's healthcare, especially concerning reproduction and childbirth, will also be addressed. (Lec. 3) Pre: junior standing or permission of the instructor.

3. Department of Physics

a. CHANGE: B.A. Program in Physics:

1) add PHY 306 as a required course

2) replace requirement of two courses from CSC 201, 211, 212 to "CSC 211 and either PHY 410 or CSC 212."

b.CHANGE: B.S. Programs in Physics and in Physics and Physical Oceanography by replacing "CSC 212" with "PHY 410" as a required course.

At the January 24 and February 11, 2002 meetings of the Curricular Affairs Committee and the February 8, 2002 meeting of the Graduate Council the following matters were considered and are now presented to the Faculty Senate.

A. Informational Matters

1. College of Arts and Sciences

*a. Department of Music

CHANGE: Last sentence of MUS 410 Applied Music (2-4) to read "More credit requires additional preparation time, higher levels of performance and senior level or music convocation performance."

b. Department of Physics

CHANGE: Prerequisite for PHY 410 to "Pre: MTH 215, CSC 211, credit or concurrent enrollment in MTH 244 and 306."

*No action by Graduate Council. Not for graduate credit.

2. College of Engineering

Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

CHANGE: Title, description and prerequisite for IME 412 to read:

IME 412 Statistical Methods and Quality Control (3)

Study of statistical methods and quality control in engineering applications including sampling and sampling distributions, statistical inference, quality improvement tools, control charts, process capability, design of experiments, and acceptance sampling. (Lec) Pre: 411 or STA 409 or permission of instructor.

3. College of Human Science and Services

School of Education

1. CHANGE: Description and prerequisite for EDC 400:

EDC 400 Middle School Curriculum (3)

Examination of contemporary middle school curriculum including trends, issues, and models. Attention focused on middle school children, middle school teachers, integrated and interdisciplinary instruction, standards-based curriculum and assessment. Undergraduates seeking Middle Level Endorsement are required to take this course, preferably the semester prior to student teaching. (Lec) Pre: 424 or 448 or permission of instructor.

2. CHANGE: Title, description and prerequisite for the following courses;

a) EDC 424 Teaching Literacy in the Elementary School (3)

Fundamental knowledge base in literacy development and instruction. Bridges theory and practice through exposure to a variety of methods and materials used to create a comprehensive literacy curriculum. (Lec) Pre: Prior or concurrent enrollment in 312, 512, graduate standing or permission of instructor.

b) EDC 425 Using Trade Books in the Reading and Writing Program (3) Instructional strategies for using trade books to develop skilled reading and comprehension, foster literary appreciation, connect literature to personal experience, and promote integration throughout the curriculum. (Lec) Pre: 424, graduate standing or permission of instructor or concurrent enrollment in 424.

c) EDC 448 Literacy Practices for Content Subjects (3)

Emphasis on the development of specialized vocabulary, textbook reading techniques, and other study skills needed to read math, science, social studies, business, and other content area materials. (Lec) Pre: 312, 512 or graduate standing.
