1. The meeting was called to order at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 3, 2007, in the Provost's conference room in Green Hall, Chairperson Rice presiding. All members were present.
2. The Minutes from Executive Committee Meetings #29, April 19, 2007; #30, April 26, 2007 and #31, May 3, 2007 were approved pending revisions. Ms. Grubman agreed to forward the revised versions to the Executive Committee later that day.
3. The Executive Committee reviewed the Agenda in preparation for that afternoon's Faculty Senate Meeting.
Among matters discussed were comments from Senator Rosen about the Nominating Committee's recommendation of an unopposed slate of officers and concerns raised by Senator Sodhi with regard to the Executive Committee's committee appointments, especially the membership to the Academic Program Review Committee (APRC).
In light of the very long Agenda for Meeting #8, the Executive Committee urged Chairperson Rice to explain at the beginning of the meeting that the meeting could not continue past the 5:00 p.m. adjournment time and to encourage everyone to keep their remarks as brief as possible to expedite business. The Executive Committee asked Chairperson Rice to announce that since there were a number of matters of business that shouldn't be carried over to fall, that he would entertain a motion to recess the meeting for 5:00 p.m. if the Agenda was not completed by 4:59.
4. The Executive Committee talked about their activities during the 2006-07 academic year and considered matters that they wanted the 07-08 FSEC to be aware of. They discussed the need to get broader participation in committees and to encourage the new Executive Committee to seek nominations as well as volunteers for committee vacancies. They also agreed that it would be helpful for the new members of the Executive Committee to get a better understanding of the budget process for their roles as members of the JSPC and suggested that if Senator Miller was elected chair, he ask Ms. Morrissey about inviting Vice President Weygand to provide the new group with an overall picture of the budget process. In addition, the Executive Committee asked Senator Miller to remind the new Executive Committee that the Senate was authorized by state law to govern with the President the University on all academic matters, a role that is cooperative rather than adversarial.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:20 p.m.
