Report of the Executive Committee on
Additional Committee Charges and Appointments for Spring 2004
The Faculty Senate Executive Committee
recommends approval of charges to and membership of the following
committees:
A. Investigatory Ad Hoc
Committee on Academic Reorganization
The Faculty Senate Executive
Committee has agreed with the President and the Provost "Što appoint
a joint committee to review the recommendations made by a group of
deans regarding the organization of our colleges." As a result the
Faculty Senate Executive Committee will constitute such an Ad Hoc
Committee, with a charge, as follows:
1) An Investigatory Ad Hoc
Committee will examine the options available for reorganization of
the Colleges at the University of Rhode Island;
2) This Investigatory Ad Hoc Committee will
have a membership made up of six fulltime Faculty and one Dean who
will act as the Chairperson. Three Faculty will come from the College
of Arts & Sciences, two members will come from the College of the
Environment & Life Sciences, and one member will come from the
College of Human Sciences & Services as follows:

3) The Investigatory Ad Hoc Committee shall
examine various models for possible reorganization of the Colleges to
determine:
a) Whether the present
organization of the Colleges is appropriate to an anticipated future
academic enterprise that is projected to be much more
interdisciplinary in scope;
b) Whether the reorganization models offered
thus far, or to be offered in the near future, are viable options for
consideration with respect to the vision and mission statements of
the University;
c) Whether other interdisciplinary structures
(partnerships, centers, institutes, etc.) can be more effectively
integrated into present or future models for the colleges and the
academic enterprise as a whole;
4) The Investigatory Ad Hoc Committee shall
report its recommendations to the Faculty Senate Executive Committee
by March 30, 2004, and then to the Faculty Senate by April 15,
2004.
B. Library Committee
The Executive Committee recommends
that the Faculty Senate approve the following special charge to and
membership of the Library Committee with the extension of
appointments by one year:
1) In consultation with the
Library faculty, the committee shall:
a) Explore options for the
University with regard to dealing with the high cost of journals and
recommend to the Faculty Senate policy for dealing with the
issue;
b) Develop a policy with regard to archiving
e-journals that are not maintained by the publishers;
2) Work with the Vice President for
Advancement on developing fund raising strategies to address the
needs of the Library in the upcoming Capital Campaign.
