C. Recommendations of
the Executive Committee -- Senator Ordonez
1) That the Faculty Senate adopt the following
Resolution regarding H5167:
BE IT RESOLVED: That the Faculty Senate of the University of Rhode
Island supports H5353 as proposed by Representative Diaz in the current
legislative session.
(See http://www.uri.edu/facsen/H5353.pdf)
2) That
the Faculty Senate approves the following recommendation regarding the
proposed North Woods site for the Research Park:
In consideration of faculty concerns
raised during the Provost's Academic Summit (especially session 8) and in
consideration of the substantial negative impacts that site selection for
the research park could impose on existing academic coursework, research
and scholarship affecting over 1200 students annually, the FSEC requests
that a panel of not fewer than five faculty, along with student representatives,
be immediately appointed to collaborate with the University Administration
in order to evaluate a location for the research park that sustains and
preserves the irreplaceable Natural Outdoor Laboratory, including the Century
Forest at URI, as an actively used resource for research and teaching.
We ask that the specific site-definition or site-selection process be postponed
until this panel can be appointed. The FSEC can expeditiously appoint
faculty members to this duty.
Furthermore, the FSEC requests that a similarly constituted panel of faculty
collaborate with the Provost, the Vice President for Administration and
the Vice President for Research and Economic Development to develop priorities
for the character of the research park and facilities to be established,
giving due diligence to complementing the University's strengths and opportunities
for academic programs, including consideration of the University's ability
to maintain research and scholarship with high, but potentially non-commercial,
value for the public good.
Because we are aware that this is a time-sensitive issue, in part because
of the stimulus finding, the FSEC pledges to work expeditiously with the administration
to be sure that all constituencies are served: students, faculty, staff,
administrators, and any potential stakeholders from the state or the immediate
community.

Woods.pdf)
