CURRICULAR REPORT FROM THE GRADUATE COUNCIL TO THE FACULTY SENATE:

At meeting No. 375 held December 7, 2001, the Graduate Council considered and approved the following curricular matters which are now submitted to the Faculty Senate for information or confirmation as indicated.

I. Matters Requiring Confirmation by Faculty Senate

A. College of Arts and Sciences

1. Graduate School of Library and Information Studies

a. Changes:

LSC 523 Special Library Service - change description to read:

A survey of some of the major categories of special libraries in academia, corporations, foundations, government agencies and the military, typically including museums, conservatories, divinity schools, legal institutions, businesses, laboratories, industries, and healthcare organizations.

LSC 544 Visual Information Science - change description and prerequisite to read:

An introduction to the interdisciplinary study of visual information science related to visual information (data) collection, analysis, processing, transmission, utilization, and communication in modern and digital libraries and information centers. Pre: LSC 504, 505, 508 or permission of instructor.

LSC 546 Computer Systems in Library Automation - change description to read:

Introduction to principles of systems analysis and the tools of analysis. Study of library automation systems and networks and the application of new technologies to library operations and services.

Reduce the number of credits required for students concurrently pursuing a Master of Library and Information Studies and a Master of Arts in English by six credits in each program. Students would complete 36 credits in Librarianship and 24 credits in English for a total of 60 credits.

Program requirements for the Human Development and Family Studies program to include:

17 credits of core courses required for all students: HDF 500, 530, 570, 571, 533 or 560 or 562, 580/581. In addition to the core, students will select a specialization from among four general areas: lifespan, public policy/administration, family studies, and family finance/counseling. Under special circumstances, students can design their own specialization with the guidance of their advisor. The specialization will require 12 credits, one of which will be a developmental seminar. Students will take a comprehensive examination and will complete a thesis. Students will have the option of including a policy or administrative internship as part of the program of study.

HDF 503 Social Development: Infancy Through Adolescence - change course number, title, description and add prerequisite to read:

HDF 512 Seminar in Middle Childhood and Adolescence 3 Survey and critical examination of research from middle childhood through adolescence. Implications for diverse populations and human service settings will be drawn. (Sem) Pre: HDF 500 or permission of instructor.

HDF 520 Developmental Issues in Later Life - change course number, title, description and prerequisite to read:

HDF 514 Seminar in Older Adulthood 3 Review of major theories of aging and application in clinical and policy contexts. Emphasis on current research and practice issues. Interdisciplinary focus on biopsychosocial aspects of growing older. (Sem) Pre: Graduate standing or permission of instructor.
