Announcements: President Carothers announced that Rhode Island had received a $6.75 million EPSCoR grant for research that will benefit URI as well as Brown University. He said that it had taken a significant amount of work and effort to get Rhode Island eligible for EPSCoR. President Carothers also reported he had recently met with Senator Reed to discuss the decline in international graduate enrollment. The President also reminded the Committee that the Board of Governors would be meeting at URI later that afternoon.
Vice President Beagle announced the receipt of an endowment for a new scholarship.
Budget: The President brought the JSPC up to date on the financial situation and explained that it was difficult to predict anything until the State announces its revenues in May.
President Carothers said he was feeling more optimistic about fall enrollments thanks to the faculty, students and staff who have participated in the phone-a-thons, which appear to have had a positive effect on the yield for the incoming freshman class.
Planning: The JSPC reviewed draft plans from each of the divisions for implementing the four strategic initiatives for the 2006-2009 Strategic Plan:
