with the new guidelines.
PART II
Informational Report on the Revised
General Education Program (2001)
During the summer 2001 The Office of the
Provost with the assistance of the Instructional Development Program
ran a series of workshops for continuing faculty members who had been
identified by department chairs and deans as the persons who were
currently and would in the future be involved in teaching general
education courses in the Social Sciences (S) area. These workshops
provided the opportunity for faculty members to find out how other
faculty members have implemented the integrated skills into their
courses. Participants also developed plans for incorporating one or
more of the integrated skills into courses that they teach. Further
information on the workshops can be found at
http://www.uri.edu/facsen/Gen_Ed_Workshops.html.
At their October and November meetings, the
UCGE Committee approved guidelines for course proposals in the Social
Sciences (S) area and the Foreign Language/Cross-cultural Competence
(FL/CC) area of the General Education Program. Details are available
on the web at http://www.uri.edu/facsen/GenEd_Appendix_A.html. Sample
proposals including syllabi should be available before spring
break.
A Letters Working Group was formed at the end
of the fall semester. The group is currently developing guidelines
and prototype syllabi for the Letters (L) area.
The UCGE Committee is now looking for
interested faculty members for the Fine Arts and Literature (A) area
working group. The English Communications (EC) area will follow Fine
Arts and Literature.
Academic deans were alerted in early February
and are expected to notify department chairs and encourage proposal
submissions as soon as possible. The General Education Application
form appears on the web at http://www.uri.edu/facsen/GenEd_Application_Form.html. A reduced-size sample form is attached to this
report.
Workshops will be available this summer for
faculty members in Foreign Language/Cross-cultural Competence and
Letters. These workshops will assist with the development of course
proposals. The University College and General Education Committee
will begin course approvals in the fall.
