Revised General Education Program (2001)

The University College and General Education Committee considered the following matters at their meeting of October 2, 2003. They are now presented to the Faculty Senate. Some matters are for informational purposes and others require approval by the Faculty Senate and the President. Those actions that require approval are so identified.

I. Matters Requiring Confirmation by the Faculty Senate

A. Fine Arts and Literature Core Area (A)

The UCGE Committee recommends that the Faculty Senate approve the following course for the (A) area of the revised General Education Program (2001):

LAR 201 Survey of Landscape Architecture (reading complex texts, engaging in artistic activity, using qualitative data)

B. Foreign Language/Cross-cultural Competence Core Area (FC)

The UCGE Committee recommends that the Faculty Senate approve the following course for the (FC) area of the revised General Education Program (2001), including the assignment of the Diversity designation:

TMD 224 Clothing and Human Behavior (examining human differences, reading complex texts, using information technology) Diversity

C. Social Sciences Core Area (S)

The UCGE Committee recommends that the Faculty Senate approve the following courses for the (S) area of the revised General Education Program (2001), including the assignment of the Diversity designation:

APG 301 The Anthropology of Nutrition (examining human differences, reading complex texts, using quantitative data) Diversity

PSC 274 (or SOC 274) Criminal Justice System (examining human differences, reading complex texts, writing effectively) Diversity

TMD 224 Clothing and Human Behavior (examining human differences, reading complex texts, using information technology) Diversity

II. Informational Matters &endash; No Confirmation Required

A. Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning Core Area (MQ)

The UCGE Committee agreed to the following guidelines recommended by the Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning core area working group:

Courses in Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning will

1. Extend and expand each student's knowledge of the mathematical, statistical and computational sciences, and the role of these sciences in the natural and social sciences, technology, and elsewhere.

2. Further develop skills in the techniques of computation, mathematical reasoning, and statistical analysis appropriate to the student's academic and vocational interests.

3. Develop an appreciation of the computational, mathematical, and statistical sciences as part of our intellectual heritage and as among our greatest collective human achievements.

B. Natural Sciences Core Area (N)

The UCGE Committee agreed to the following guidelines recommended by the Natural Sciences core area working group:

Courses in Natural Sciences will

1. Develop student understanding of how scientists collect and interpret data in one or more disciplines within the natural sciences

2. Provide a foundation of knowledge in one or more areas of a natural science

3. Create assignments or exam questions designed to develop critical thinking skills necessary to understand, interpret, and evaluate scientific information

4. Develop student understanding of the importance of the natural sciences in resolving real life problems
