Revised General Education Program
(2001)
The University College and General Education Committee considered
the following matters at their meeting of April 1, 2004. They are now
presented to the Faculty Senate for confirmation.
I. English Communication - writing Core
Area (ECw)
The UCGE Committee recommends that the Faculty Senate
approve the following course for the (ECw) area of the revised
General Education Program (2001):
BGS 100 Pro-Seminar (reading complex texts, writing
effectively, using information technology)
II. Fine Arts and Literature Core Area
(A)
The UCGE Committee recommends that the Faculty Senate
approve the following courses for the (A) area of the revised General
Education Program (2001), including the assignment of the Diversity
designation:
1) CLA 391 Ancient Laughter: The Comic Tradition in
Greece and Rome (examining human differences, reading complex texts,
writing effectively) Diversity

The UCGE Committee recommends that the Faculty Senate

V. Natural Sciences Core Area (N)
The UCGE Committee recommends that the Faculty Senate
approve the following courses for the (N) area of the revised General
Education Program (2001):

2) GEO 100 Environmental Geology (reading complex texts, using
quantitative data, using qualitative data)
3) HPR 109 Honors Study in Natural Sciences (speaking

5) OCG 123 Oceans, Atmospheres, and Global Change (reading

VI. Social Sciences Core Area (S)
The UCGE Committee recommends that the Faculty Senate
approve the following courses for the (S) area of the revised General
Education Program (2001), including the assignment of the Diversity
designation:

VII. Honors Program Courses
The UCGE Committee has approved the following guidelines for
Honors Program Courses (HPR) and recommends confirmation by the
Faculty Senate:
… Honors sections of existing courses for general education will
continue to receive automatic approval.
… Honors courses approved by the UCGE Committee for general
education will be approved for specific integrated skills. The
Director of the Honors Program will ensure that the courses taught
under the approved number integrate at least 3 of the approved
skills.
… Every April, the UCGE Committee will receive a report from the
Director of the Honors Program on HPR topics and skills for the
coming year so that, if a problem is perceived, it can be corrected
it in time for publication of the Fall Catalog.
… Following are the Honors Program courses that have been
approved for Fall 2004:
HPR 105 Honors Study in Fine Arts and Literature (at least three
