Revised General Education Program (2001)

The University College and General Education Committee considered the following matters at their meeting of April 22, 2004. They are now presented to the Faculty Senate for confirmation.

I. Fine Arts and Literature Core Area (A)

The UCGE Committee recommends that the Faculty Senate approve the following courses for the (A) area of the revised General Education Program (2001), including the assignment of the Diversity designation:

1) AAF 247 Introduction to Literature of the African Diaspora (examining human differences, reading complex texts, writing effectively) Diversity

2) AAF 248 African American Literature from 1900 to the Present (examining human differences, reading complex texts, writing effectively) Diversity

3) ENG 247 Introduction to Literature of the African Diaspora (examining human differences, reading complex texts, writing effectively) Diversity

4) ENG 248 African American Literature from 1900 to the Present (examining human differences, reading complex texts, writing effectively) Diversity

II. Foreign Language/Cross-cultural Competence Core Area (FC)

The UCGE Committee recommends that the Faculty Senate approve the following course for the (FC) area of the revised General Education Program (2001), including the assignment of the Diversity designation:

RLS 131 Introduction to Asian Philosophies and Religions (examining human differences, reading complex texts, using qualitative data) Diversity

III. Letters Core Area (L)

The UCGE Committee recommends that the Faculty Senate approve the following courses for the (L) area of the revised General Education Program (2001), including the assignment of the Diversity designation:

1) ENG 356 Literature and the Law (examining human differences, reading complex texts, writing effectively) Diversity

2) HIS 160 Technology and American Life: 1800-Present (examining human differences, reading complex texts, writing effectively) Diversity

3) HIS 314 Seventeenth- and Eighteenth-Century European Cultural History (reading complex texts, speaking effectively, writing effectively)

4) LET 151 Topics in Letters (at least three integrated skills forwarded by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and approved by the UCGE Committee) Letters topics may not be applied to the Diversity overlay

LET 151 Topic L: Francophone Hip-Hop Culture (examining human differences, reading complex texts, writing effectively)

LET 151 Topic Q: Contemporary France (examining human differences, writing effectively, using qualitative data)

IV. Mathematical and Quantitative Reasoning Core Area (MQ)

The UCGE Committee recommends that the Faculty Senate approve the following course for the (MQ) area of the revised General Education Program (2001):

CSC 201 Introduction to Computer Programming (reading complex texts, using quantitative data, using information technology)

V. Natural Sciences Core Area (N)

The UCGE Committee recommends that the Faculty Senate approve the following courses for the (N) area of the revised General Education Program (2001):

1) PHY 109 Introduction to Physics (reading complex texts, using quantitative data, using information technology)

2) BIO 286 Humans, Insects and Disease (examining human differences, reading complex texts, using qualitative data) Diversity

VI. Social Sciences Core Area (S)

The UCGE Committee recommends that the Faculty Senate approve the following courses for the (S) area of the revised General Education Program (2001), including the assignment of the Diversity designation:

1) ECN 201 Principles of Economics: Microeconomics (three of the following skills: reading complex texts, writing effectively, using quantitative data, using information technology)

2) ECN 202 Principles of Economics: Macroeconomics (three of the following skills: reading complex texts, writing effectively, using qualitative data, using quantitative data, using information technology)

3) GEG 101 World Geography (examining human differences, reading complex texts, using information technology) Diversity

4) GEG 104 Political Geography (examining human differences, reading complex texts, using information technology) Diversity
