December 19, 2011

I. The meeting was called to order at 3:05 p.m. on Monday, December 19, 2011 in Library Conference Room A, Chairperson Mundorf presiding.

The following members were present: Professors Brand, Doerner, English, Jervis, Honhart, MacDonald, Misto and Mundorf; Vice Provost Beauvais.

Guests: Dr. DiPippo from the Department of Computer Science and Statistics.

II. The Minutes of 2011-12 Meeting #3, November 21, 2011 were approved as corrected.

III. REPORTS

Chairperson Mundorf reported that after the revised skills for BCH 190 were approved by the UCGE Committee and no negative comments received from members of the CAC, the course was considered approved for online instruction.

IV. UNFINISHED BUSINESS

A. College of Arts and Sciences

1. Department of Art and Art History

The change in requirements for the B.A. major in Art History was approved with a correction in the first footnote.

2. Department of Computer Science and Statistics

Following discussion with Professor DiPippo, it was agreed that Professor DiPippo would provide revised syllabi for CSC 420, CSC 423 and CSC 424 for consideration at the January meeting. (Subsequent to the meeting syllabi for CSC 420, 423 and 424 were resubmitted and approved by electronic mail.)

3. Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures

Following discussion, consideration of the addition of CHN 307 (not repeatable) was postponed pending receipt of a syllabus with clearer objectives and more detail regarding assignments.

4. Department of Political Science

Consideration of the change in level and number for PSC 288 to PSC 388 (288) and prerequisite for 388 (288) remained postponed pending receipt of additional information.

5. Department of Political Science and Women’s Studies Program

Consideration of the addition of PSC 441 (or WMS 441) remained postponed pending receipt of additional information.

B. College of the Environment and Life Sciences

1. Department of Geosciences

Ms. Grubman reported that the following proposals had been forwarded to the College of Engineering for consideration and she had not yet received anything from the college.

a. Cross-List GEO 482 with CVE 482
b. Cross-List GEO 484 with CVE 484

2. Department of Plant Sciences

Consideration of the addition of PLS 312 remained postponed pending receipt of requested information.

V. NEW BUSINESS

A. College of Arts and Sciences

C 1. Department of Art and Art History

The deletion of ARH 363, ARH 372, and ARH 462 was approved pending clarification of final offering dates.

C 2. Department of Computer Science and Statistics

The change in prerequisite for CSC 491was approved.


C 3. Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures

The change in title for SPA 472 was approved pending conformation that the chair had signed the form.

B. College of Engineering

C Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Ocean Engineering

The change in title and description for CVE 483 (or OCE) 483* was approved.

C. College of the Environment and Life Sciences

1. Department of Biological Sciences

The following were approved pending requested changes:


a. The change in credits, method of instruction and prerequisite for BIO 101 (topics requested).

b. The change in credits, description, method of instruction and prerequisite for BIO 102 (remove lab assignments and change co-requisite).

c. The addition of BIO 103 was approved.

d. The addition of BIO 104 was approved.

2. Department of Environmental and Natural Resources Economics

Consideration of the addition of EEC 497* was postponed pending discussion by instructor with Ms. Washor about experiential learning/internships


D. College of Human Science and Services

1.  Department of Kinesiology

a. Consideration of the request to offer KIN 123 online was postponed pending an explanation of speaking effectiveness skill requirements in syllabus with possible review of use of videos for such a large class or consideration of proposing a change in skills.

b. Consideration of the addition of KIN 444X* was postponed pending review of overlap with NFS 528 and possible other courses, clarification of learning objectives for undergraduate and graduate students, including why they are different for a 400-level course, more information about the adjunct professor, and replacing general prerequisites with courses. It was further agreed that the course should be reposted on the Temporary Course Newsletter for graduate credit.


E. College of Pharmacy

The change in credits for PHP 317 was approved pending clarification of new method of instruction.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:04 p.m.
