I. The meeting was called to order at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, March 26, 2012 in Library Conference Room A, Chairperson Mundorf presiding.
The following members were present: Professors Covino, Doerner, English, Honhart, Jervis, MacDonald, Misto, Mundorf, and Nassersharif; Ms. Buss; Vice Provost Beauvais. Ms. Neff from the Faculty Senate Office was also in attendance.
Guests: Deans McKinney and Ciccomascolo from the College of Human Science and Services and Professors Miles and Hutt for the new courses from the Harrington School of Communication and Media.
II. The Minutes of 2011-12 Meeting #6, February 27, 2012 were approved.
Chairperson Mundorf reported that the Faculty Senate had removed the recommendation for the name change for the College of Human Sciences and Services and referred the proposal back to the CAC with the request that the CAC take the broader context of the University and State of Rhode Island into consideration before recommending a name change.
Following discussion, Deans McKinney and Ciccomascolo informed the Committee that they were planning to meet with the College of Human Sciences and Services management team and faculty to consider whether they could reach a compromise on the name of the college. It was decided that the CAC would take no further action until they hear back from the college.
IV. UNFINISHED BUSINESS
A. College of Arts and Sciences
1. Department of Mathematics
Following discussion, the addition of MTH 101 was approved.
2. Department of Political Science
Consideration of the change in level and number for PSC 288 to PSC 388 (288) and prerequisite for 388 (288) remained postponed pending receipt of additional information.
3. Department of Political Science and Women's Studies Program
Consideration of the addition of PSC 441 (or WMS 441) remained postponed pending receipt of additional information.
B. College of the Environment and Life Sciences
1. Department of Geosciences
Ms. Grubman noted that the Committee has received materials from the College of Engineering about the cross listing (see item V, D, 3 and 4) and a request to include the cross listing of EVS 482*.
a. The cross listing of GEO 482* with CVE 482* and inclusion of EVS 482* was approved.
b. The cross listing of GEO 484* with CVE 484* was approved.
2. Department of Plant Sciences
Consideration of the addition of PLS 312 remained postponed pending receipt of requested information.
C. College of Human Science and Services
Department of Kinesiology
Ms. Grubman reported that she had received no further information about the addition of KIN 444X* and consideration by the CAC and Graduate Council remained postponed.
V. NEW BUSINESS
A. College of Arts & Sciences
1. Department of English
It was agreed to remove from the consent agenda the change in description and method of instruction for ENG 110 and ENG 160.
Following discussion, the motion to change the method of instruction failed.
Ms. Grubman was asked to notify the Department of English and Enrollment Services that the courses had been approved as Lecture 4 for sound reasons and the decision to allow the department to offer them this year in a different format had been temporary and due to extenuating circumstances. She was asked to encourage them to work together to create an additional one-hour session for each section of the course, or come up with a satisfactory alternative that has students attend class for a 4th hour each week. She was directed to copy the College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Office in on the message.
2. Harrington School of Communications and Media and Department of Art and Art History, Department of Communication Studies, Film Media Program and Department of Writing and Rhetoric
After discussion, the CAC agreed that a course code should not be associated with the name of a donor. The two HAR courses were approved as FLM 312 (or ART 312 or COM 312) and FLM 313 (or ART, COM, or WRT 313.**
3. Department of Mathematics
Following discussion, consideration of the change in credits and description for MTH 111 was postponed pending receipt of responses from consulted departments as to whether the change can be accommodated for their majors. Ms. Grubman was also asked to request the original 3-credit course syllabus and more detailed syllabus for the proposed 4-credit course.
4. Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures
a. The addition of CHN 485 and CHN 486 was approved
b. The request to replace ITL 391, 392 with ITL 390 and the curriculum change were approve pending receipt of the addition of learning outcomes for the new course.
C 5. Department of Music
The following consent Agenda items were approved:
a. The change in title and prerequisite for MUS 171
b. The change in title description and prerequisite for MUS 172
c. The change in description for MUS 227
d. The change in title for MUS 271 and MUS 272
e. The change in prerequisite for MUS 391 and MUS 424
6. Department of Writing and Rhetoric
a. Consideration of the change in credits and description for WRT 302 was postponed pending receipt of old and proposed syllabi.
C b. The change in prerequisite for WRT 495 was approved.
B. College of Business Administration
C The change in title and description for BUS 315 was approved.
C. College of Engineering
1. Department of Chemical Engineering
The change in description of electives for undergraduate students was not considered due to lack of remaining meeting time.
2. Civil and Environmental Engineering
The cross listing of GEO 482* and GEO 484* with CVE was approved under IV, B, 1.)
3. Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering
C The change in prerequisite for ELE 109, 212 and 215 and correct spelling of "Kirchhoff's Laws" in ELE 212 was approved.
4. Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Systems Engineering
C a. The deletion of ISE 443* and ISE 444* was approved
b. The cross listing of the following courses was not considered due to lack of remaining meeting time.
1) ISE 411* as ISE 411 (or MCE 411)*
2) ISE 460* as ISE 460 (or MCE 460)*
5. Consideration of the addition of EGR 109 and EGR 110 was postponed pending receipt of more complete syllabi.
Ms. Grubman was asked to request sample syllabi from the College of Engineering, which might be used as models for the Syllabi Website.
D. College of the Environment and Life Sciences
1. Department of Cell and Molecular Biology
C The change in prerequisite for MIC 211 was approved.
2. Department of Environmental and Natural Resource Economics
The addition of EEC 355 was not considered due to lack of remaining meeting time.
3. Department of Natural Resources Science
C The correction of the listing for GEO 482* (or NRS 482, EVS 483, or CVE 482) by adding EVS 482 under "Environmental Science" to the catalog was approved as part of item IV, B, 1.
4. Department of Plant Sciences
The change in name of undergraduate major in "Environmental Horticulture and Turfgrass Management" to "Plant Sciences" was not considered due to lack of remaining meeting time.
E. College of Human Science and Services
Department of Kinesiology
Consideration of the addition of KIN 210 and KIN 250 was postponed due to lack of remaining meeting time.
