Scenes from Faculty Senate

University of Rhode Island Faculty Senate

May 3, 2012

Recess Meeting of the Faculty Senate on Thursday, May 3, 2012 in the Cherry Auditorium, Chester Kirk Building

1. Call to order at 3:00 p.m.

2. Continuation of Report of the University College and General Education Committee

- Senator Maier-Speredelozzi

The University College General Education Committee has reached a point in the process of creating a new general

education program where it seems prudent to bring two of the three elements of the program to the Senate:

(1) The Objectives and Outcomes

(2) The Principles

The third part, (3) the Structure, has not been determined yet and will not be voted on at this meeting.

The votes at the recess meeting are to guide the UCGE committee in the development of the complete general education

program. The existing general education program will remain in effect until a full revision program is proposed and approved.

The Objectives and Outcomes document defines the areas in which URI students will be able to show proficiency upon graduation.

Many potential structures could deliver these 11 outcomes. The principles, while they touch lightly on issues of structure, are general

ground rules, also deliverable through a wide variety of structures.

The UCGE committee will continue to incorporate faculty suggestions as they work on details. Once that work is complete, they

will bring the entire package to the Senate for a vote.
