“CHINA seen by…exhibition ”

pictured left - Huang Yan (a representative image)

In tandem with the Fall, 2007 Honors Colloquium on Contemporary China, this major focused group exhibition, curated by Judith Tolnick Champa, treats contemporary China in photography. Specifically it juxtaposes impressive works made by still resident Chinese (“insiders”) with those made by professional photographers visiting from other countries, including the U.S. The curatorial intention is that through creative ferment and cultural juxtaposition, competing international interpretations of the meanings of contemporary China will emerge for informed and lively consideration. Inspired by the 1965 film comprised of 6 sketches of Paris by leading New-Wave directors, produced by Barbet Schroeder, (and re-made in 1984 with vignettes by 6 other directors) the “CHINA seen by” exhibition will offer up various distinctive narratives on the complex of sensibilities that is China. The exhibition aims to look frankly at a country that has taken primacy on the global stage through several vantage points—yet all united by the universal idiom of photography.

“Re-Covering New Orleans” by Jeffrey Marshall

Jeffrey Marshall, a Professor of Drawing at The New England Institute of Art and a former public school teacher in New Orleans, returned there to draw in the debris of the Ninth Ward, a neighborhood immediately devastated by the levee break. His extraordinary campaign has yielded significant large scale drawings, a passionate project that is ongoing for the artist, with several additional drawing campaigns in the region.
