Dana Shugar Colloquium Lecture

In light of the Dana Shugar Colloquium series named in her memory, a
new generation of students from many fields, especially English and Women's Studies, want to know, "Who Was Dana Shugar?" In response to this query, English Professors Mary Cappello and Jean Walton will present an informal program the first week after vacation, on April 1st at 4 pm in Swan 304. They'll be sharing video footage of Dana from the 1995 First Annual Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies Symposium in which she presented from her then recently published ground-breaking book, Separatism and Women's Community, and will offer a context for understanding her feminist work and legacy. Cappello and Walton would like to invite members of the URI community who wish to join in answering our students' question, "Who Was Dana Shugar?" to share their words and their thoughts, formally or informally at this event following the 30 minute film screening.

Global Issues, Personal Narratives: A writing workshop introducing The World Voice Project and utilizing it to share our voice

Presented By: Joseph A Santiago

The World Voice book series has the goal of fostering communication and
commonality of all people across cultures, beyond borders and identities. This project presents an opportunity to become a part of one of the largest emerging community learning networks (CLN) of human sociocultural expression and inclusive global experience. In Joseph's words, "When we get together to share and write our experiences we begin to see ourselves as individuals that are part of constellations of culture and diversity instead of perceiving diversity as something that is separate from us and is acting upon our lives." The World Voice series inspires readers as it does contributors to take hold of their own creative capacity and to fashion their lives in a way that makes them proud to be living it!

In attending this workshop the audience will be engaging the vision of The World Voice series. After a brief introduction and sharing some personal narratives from the project, Joseph will invite the audience to share their voice on issues that affect their lives. The audience members who participate and submit their work from the writing workshop will have the opportunity to be considered for inclusion in the next internationally released volume of the World Voice project.

Joseph Santiago is an Independent Publisher, Program Coordinator with the URI GLBT Center, who is currently pursuing doctoral studies in Industrial and Organizational Psychology.

Gender Project, At Face Value

What is it with Gender anyway?

Presented By: Krista Handfield and Jaye Watts

Reception, and conversation to follow

The Gender Project At Face Values purpose is to help answer this question. What is it with gender anyway? It creates a safe space for people of all ages, races, denominations, conditioning, and judgements, to experience a variety of gender expressions ranging from the hyper feminine, to androgynous, to hyper male and everything in between. It allows us to anyalze each face without being judged ourselves. It helps recognize the conditioning society has placed on us. This social conditioning forces us to establish the sex, a person was assigned at birth before knowing how to act toward them, rather than accepting, without judgement, the gender or lack of gender the person is expressing.

Krista Handfield is an artist and founder of The Gender Project. Jaye Watts is an administrator with YPI in Providence RI.

Transgender Research: Where It's Been, Where It Needs to Go

Presented By: Victor Ellingsen

The past few decades have seen a drastic increase in the amount and scope of trans-related research.  What has this research found?  How applicable is it?  What issues still need to be addressed?  We will consider these questions in light of limitations inherent in the field of trans research.

Victor Ellingsen became co-director of Lifelines Rhode Island, a transgender support organization, in March of 2009.  He has given educational presentations for groups such as PFLAG and URI’s GLBT Cetner’s Welcome Wednesdays, and has written for Options Magazine.  He is looking forward to a career in psychological research.

Ron Suresha is a former Providenizen now living in New London, Connecticut. His published nonfiction includes Bears on Bears: Interviews & Discussions; and two books named a Lambda Literary award finalist, Bi Men: Coming Out; and Bisexual Perspectives on the Life and Work of Alfred C Kinsey. Living with HIV/AIDS

Presented By: Darren Wells

In Darren's words - "I plan to discuss the kinds of adjustments Ive had to make in order to accommodate my continued survival. Ive had to change my self-concept several times, from 20-something muscle twink to dying to fighting this thing to finally admitting that the virus has made me weaker, and limited my options and abilities, accepting that I could not pull myself up by my own bootstraps and make it without outside help. My latest challenge is making the transition from a disabled identity to a man reintegrating into the work force, and I plan to make that part the main focus of my presentation.

Documenting Queer History

Presented By: Jen Manion

We are, as a community, quite ignorant about the "Truths" which have been
spoken by those who came before us. From the perspective of an historian, Jen will discuss the challenges associated with, and the importance of recording and presenting Queer history. As a community, lgbtq people are actually quite ignorant of our history. It is not our fault - most of us are not taught it in school.
In many ways, the queer past is actively suppressed. This presentation
will introduce participants to some basic resources in LGBTQ history
and highlight the work of the Queer Conn History project we are
working on at Connecticut College
