Great Performances

Sponsored in part by the Anthony E. Perrotti Great Performances Endowment

One benefit of human nature is our ability, and indeed need, to create and appreciate the visual and performing arts.  Anthropologically, there is evidence of man using music, song, dance, art and the spoken word to celebrate life’s events – birth, marriage, and death − and to entertain.  It is a visceral part of the human condition.  As director of the University of Rhode Island’s Great Performances Series, I, Roxana Tourigny, have the privilege of facilitating these experiences.  Performing artists of world renown in diverse genres are brought to campus and the community on a regular basis.  These presentations − funded by donations, grants, endowments and the university’s arts and culture fees − are available to students at a greatly reduced ticket price.  In addition, we provide outreach activities by our artists in area schools, senior centers, master class activities and other community events.  As an integral part of the academic atmosphere on campus, we provide a practical learning and work experience for students in the areas of marketing, events planning, hospitality, graphic design and public relations through jobs, internships and for-credit positions.
