URI and FEU to Create Academic Opportunities in Korea and Rhode Island

On February 17th, University President David M. Dooley and Far East University President Kee Il Lyu signed a formal memorandum of understanding. The two have agreed to promote and support opportunities for their faculty and students to visit the other university in an effort to grow learning, research and teaching.

Last fall, faculty and students from the Korean university visited URI. At a luncheon hosted by URI Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Donald DeHayes said, "As outlined in our academic plan, Charting Our Path to the Future, one of our goals is to create global citizens. We want to strengthen the emphasis on global education across the curriculum and develop a model that expands our international/global programs, partnerships, and opportunities."

DeHayes and Lyu stand on common ground. Both universities have an interest in renewable energy. URI is exploring opportunities in wind energy and Far East University is exploring opportunities in solar energy. Other interests of Far East students rest in areas of study offered by URI, including journalism, film, communications, nursing, theater, and business.

"Far East is offering an expanding number of courses taught in English that should be of interest to our students, such as entrepreneurship, tourism, education, and health science, in addition to courses in the Korean language, culture, and social policy," said DeHayes.

Far East students are now being offered a chance to learn English. The Korean university has also expressed interest in hosting URI students to enhance its students' conversational English skills. The next step for URI will be to have a team visit Far East University.
