The Graduate School and its Committee on Scholarships and Fellowships invites nominations for URI Graduate Fellowships. Nominations are due in the Graduate School on 1 March of each year.
Eligibility and Terms of Fellowships:
URI Fellowships are awarded to graduate students in recognition of achievement and promise as scholars. In addition to a stipend at the appropriate level, Fellowship awards provide payment for tuition, health insurance and fees. The awards are intended to enable students to pursue graduate studies and research without rendering any service to the University.
Nominees for URI Graduate Fellowships must be candidates for the Ph.D. degree who have been or will be admitted to full standing by September of the year of the award. The principal criteria by which nominees will be judged are: demonstrated ability and promise of academic achievement; letters of reference; cumulative grade point averages; scores on appropriate national tests where pertinent; personal statements of professional objectives; and other evidence of promise (e.g., publications, professional participation, etc.). These data will be reviewed and evaluated by the Committee in making its decision. Preference will be given to those nominees who have not previously held URI Graduate Fellowships or URI Foundation/Graduate School Minority Fellowships.
Graduate Fellows are required to be full-time students (12 credits per term) and may not engage in remunerative work during the year unless specifically approved by the Dean of The Graduate School. Graduate Fellowships provide a nine-month (academic year) stipend at the appropriate level (I, II, or III) and full remission of tuition and enrollment fees.
Awards are for one year only, with no commitment or implication either of renewal or of continued support from the Graduate School. It is assumed that URI Fellowships will be held by students for one year only, and that such students will subsequently be supported from departmental or college resources for such time as may be necessary for them to complete their degrees.
Information to be submitted includes:
1) Undergraduate and Graduate GPA's must be submitted.
2) A completed Nomination Form for each nominee.
3) Letters of Reference and Supporting Information. Nominees should have two letters of
reference in support of their nomination. The two letters may be written by any combination of referees from the following list: Departmental Chair, Director of Graduate Studies, the student's Major Advisor, or other faculty as might be appropriate. Copies of supporting information (e.g., publication abstracts, additional letters of support, teaching evaluations, etc.) may also be included.
4) Complete undergraduate and graduate transcripts.
5) The nominee's Statement of Professional Objectives.
6) A curriculum vitae (maximum of two pages).
7) A statement from the department chair detailing type and extent of support the department will provide to the nominee should they receive the award but not complete all degree requirements within the award year.
Each Department or Program may submit a maximum of 3 nominations, rank-ordered. The ranked list and the completed nominations are due in the Graduate School by 4:30 pm on the deadline date. Late nominations cannot be accepted.
The Committee's ultimate ranking of candidates may not correspond with that of a department. Committee members might assign different weights to the various items on the evaluation form. Fellowships are awarded to individual students and there are no departmental quotas.
Awards will be announced during the first week of April via letter to recipients with copies to the Chairperson and Director of Graduate Studies in students' departments. The initial notice of award will specify that the Fellowship is contingent upon available funding and upon satisfactory academic progress.
