The Graduate School and its Committee on Scholarships and Fellowships invite your nominations for URI Foundation and Graduate School Minority Graduate Fellowships. Nominations are due in the Graduate School on 1 March of each year.
Eligibility and Terms of the Fellowship
The URI Foundation annually sponsors fellowships for students who are U.S. citizens and members of one of the minority groups identified in Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as reauthorized in 1992 [ Alaskan Native, Asian or Pacific Islander, Black (not of Hispanic origin), and Hispanic].
URI Foundation Minority Graduate Fellowships are awarded to qualified students from such groups in recognition of their achievement and promise as scholars, and are intended to enable students to pursue graduate studies and research without rendering any service to the University. In addition to a stipend at the appropriate level, Fellowship awards provide payment for tuition, health insurance and fees for one academic year. The principal criteria by which nominees will be judged are demonstrated ability and promise of academic achievement. Letters of reference, cumulative grade point averages, scores on appropriate national tests where pertinent, personal statements of professional objectives, and other evidence of promise (e.g., publications, professional participation, etc.) will be reviewed and evaluated by the Committee in making its decisions. Preference will be given to those nominees who have not previously held URI Graduate Fellowships or URI Foundation/Graduate School Minority Fellowships.
Nominees for URI Graduate Fellowships must be degree candidates who have been or will be admitted to full standing by September of the year of the award. Foundation Fellows are required to be full-time students (12 credits per term) and may not engage in remunerative work during the academic year unless specifically approved by the Dean of The Graduate School. Awards are made for one year only with the expectation that Fellowship recipients will be subsequently supported by departmental and/or other funding sources, as arranged by the department, should this be necessary.
Information to be submitted includes:
1) Undergraduate & Graduate GPA's must be submitted.
2) A completed Nomination Form for each nominee.
3) Letters of Reference and Supporting Information. Nominees should have two letters of
reference in support of their nomination. The two letters can be written by any combination of referees from the following list: Department Chair, Director of Graduate Studies, the student's Major Advisor, or other faculty as might be appropriate. Copies of supporting information (e.g., publication abstracts, additional letters of support, teaching evaluations, etc.) can also be included.
4) Complete undergraduate and graduate transcripts.
5) The nominee's Statement of Professional Objectives.
6) A curriculum vitae (maximum of two pages).
7) A statement from the department chair detailing type and extent of support the department will provide to the nominee should he/she receive the award but not complete all degree requirements within the award year.
Departments may nominate as many students as they wish for these awards, but nominees must be rank ordered should a department submit more than one name. Ranked lists and the completed nomination forms must be submitted to the Graduate School by 4:30 pm on the deadline date. Nominations that arrive in the Graduate School subsequent to that time cannot be accepted.
The Committee's ultimate ranking of candidates may not correspond with those of a department. Committee members might assign different weights to the various items on the evaluation form. Fellowships are awarded to individual students and there are no departmental quotas.
Awards will be announced during the first week of April via letter to recipients with copies to the Chairperson and Director of Graduate Studies in students' departments. The initial notice of award will specify that the Fellowship is contingent upon available funding and satisfactory academic progress.
