University of Le Havre, France
The University of Le Havre is a public university, one of the three in Normandy, and was founded in 1984. The University is right in the heart of the town and has good public services to all the surrounding areas. The University of Le Havre, like others in France, is structured around three main concepts: self-government, participation and multidisciplinary. Self-government is first of all evident in administrative autonomy. A President, who is elected by the various committees of the institution, runs the University. An elected Director or Dean also independently manages the funds allocated by government, as well as funds raised by private or corporate sponsorship. The University also exercises autonomy in deciding the curriculum, the teaching methods and the examination procedure; the qualifications however, remain nationally administered. The University believes in 'participation' or interaction, for many reasons, the main one being that if it is to accurately reflect what is in the best interests of all parties, then all parties must be involved in the decision-making. The University is committed to a policy of being 'multidisciplinary', this means that each Faculty is made up of various department, each in charge of one subject. They may differ in type and structure but they all have a common objective, that of teaching a balanced, practical qualification which will benefit the student in their chosen filed or career.
There are basically two forms of study at the University of Le Havre, of long duration or short term study leading to a diploma. The short term lasts only two years, whilst the long term can consist of various courses over six years. Short term studies are centered in the University Institute of Technology(IUT) and concentrate on qualifications for various sectors of industry and business. The courses take two years to complete and lead to a University Diploma of Technology(DUT), which are widely respected for obtaining lower level management positions in the manufacturing and service industries. Long term studies may consist of several courses, each lasting two years, which together build up the requires level of study in the chosen subject. These courses are organized in three 'cycles', each leading to a National diploma.
