General Web Design Guidelines

1. Include university logo or text box. It is recommended that all campus units use the University of Rhode Island logo or university text box or equivalent on upper level menue pages. Refer to the logo usage guidelines for instructions.

2. Link to your parent organizations.  Include links to your parent organizations and to the campus home page at http://www.uri.edu when possible.

3. Avoid duplicate information.  Avoid including information on your pages which is the responsiblilty of another organization. Link to those organizations and their pages rather than writing duplicate information.

4. Keep your pages simple and clear. Avoid lengthy paragraphs. Use headings and lists to make the information easy to scan. In general, use any color outside of white and black with caution.  White backgrounds are usually used for sites with a lot of text content, while black backgrounds are usually used to achieve an effect of "coolness".  Also avoid having too many graphics and large graphics which increase download times and reduce the effectiveness and readability of your pages.

5. Use an orderly page layout
. Arrange all your page elements (such blocks of text, images, and headings) in a clear, logical manner to highlight the central information or activity on your page.

6. Provide a consistent appearance for your Web pages to help your user recognize your Web site. Use small identifying image or logo on each page.   Place all navigation controls at the same location on every page.

7. Content, content, and content.  You page should provide users with unique and interesting content that they can't find anywhere else.  It is also important to update your page as soon as new materials come in.

8. Make navigation on your site easy.  Use consistent navigation schemes on every page and place them in the same location throughout your site.

9. Provide readily available contact information. Include your  complete postal mailing address, phone numbers, and the names of key contact person in your organization on your home page. Include, at a minimum, an email address on every page.

10. Test your pages with different browsers, screen resolutions, and color settings.  Tailor your pages for the type of browser(s) your target audience use. Making your entire site for only the newest browsers will cut your visitors by 50% or more.

11. Use ALT tag for images.   Keep in mind that some users turn off graphic images to shorten download time. Use HTML ALT tag for naming graphic images and include textual links when possible.

12. Avoid meaningless links.  Links affect the utility of your pages.  Use descriptive names or text for hyperlinks. For example:

Avoid: To learn more the author, John Doe, click here.

Use instead: Author: John Doe.

13. Date stamp all pages on your Web site to let users know if your content is up to date.

14. Comply with copyright laws for all your Web page content and images. Know the source for your contents.  Don't download anything from the Web without permission.
