Managing Your Disk Space

The central URI Web server (www.uri.edu) provides a shared system for hosting tens and thousands of Web pages for departmental units, faculty, staff and students.  Working on such shared system is a cooperative effort.  In order to assure resources are available for all users, we need your cooperation to help us control current disk use.  As of June 2001, disk quotas are in effect.  Each Web account on the central Web server will be allocated 20MB of default disk space.  If you have a legitimate need, you can request a higher quota by filling out a quota increase request form

1. How do I find out how much disk space I am currently using?

Open WS-FTP and log on to the Web server as you normally do.

Once you are logged on, you are connected to the central Web server for uploading/downloading files between your local machine and the Web server.  You'll see a screen similar to the one below.  The files on your local computer appear in the left window and your files on the Web server appears in the right window.  Your disk quota information for your Web account appears on the lower left screen.

2. How do I read the disk quota information from WS-FTP?

Disk_quota_instr

Both measurements are in bytes. To convert to Megabytes divide the measurement stated by 1000000. The current disk allocation for each account is 20000000 bytes (20MB).

3. What happens if I exceed my disk quota?

If you reach your quota limit, you will not be able to upload any files to the Web server.

You will get a warning from WS-FTP similar to the following.  You should immediately remove any unwanted files. You can also move files that are currently not in use to local desktop machine.

4. How do I request additional disk space?

You need to fill out quota increase request form to request additional disk space.  Anyone requesting higher quotas must be able to justify the need for more disk space.

5. How do I reduce disk space?

If you exceed your disk quota, you may have to reduce your disk space by deleting unused files on the Web server.  If your Web pages were created using FrontPage, you will see that FrontPage generates folders that start with _vti. If so, you may delete them because they contain information that are not used by our Web server but they do consume disk space.

6. Where can I find instructions on how to do WS-FTP or Fetch?

If you have problems uploading files to the Web server, please visit the instructions on how to use WS-FTP or Fetch.
