What is a web template?

Web templates are pre-designed layouts that allow beginners and experienced designers alike to build professional quality web sites faster and easier. Web templates will also help to provide a consistent look and image and serve to further connect all of the constituencies to the University.

What is a Dreamweaver Web Template? What are the advantages of using Dreamweaver Templates?

Today Adobe Dreamweaver has become the standard tool used globally by web professionals to design and develop pages, site and applications. One of the main attractive feature of Dreamweaver which has made it so popular is, the Dreamweaver Template technology and the ease with which these templates can be created and used by even beginners.

A Dreamweaver Web Template is a common structure created and used for all or some pages of a website using the Adobe Dreamweaver software. Usually websites follow a standard structure, for example, a header, a navigation bar and a footer that is common to all your pages. Imagine you need to develop a site that has 25+ pages with a lot of content. If you need to make one small change to the structure, let's say adding a new link, or adding a What's New section in the right column, or adding some code in the page header, you would need to go to each of those 25+ pages and change it manually.

One major advantage of using Dreamweaver Templates is when you want to modify the common elements of your pages or the structure of your pages. All you need to do is make your changes to the template and save them. All the pages using the template are automatically updated without you having to check and modify each page. Thus dreamweaver templates save a lot of precious development and maintenance time!

Another advantage dreamweaver templates provide is separation of design & code from content for pages using templates. This helps content editors to confidently make changes to their web pages.

Keep in mind that there can be any number of dreamweaver templates for a website. That is, each section of a website can have its own template with variations in structure or design from the others.

How do I obtain the Adobe Dreamweaver software?Which version of Dreamweaver should I use?

You may obtain an educational license of Adobe Dreamweaver by purchasing it from the RAM Computer Store or by contacting ASAP software sales representative, Joe Cribari (Phone: 1-800-248-2727 x15536, Email: Joseph_Cribari@Dell.com ).

We recommend you use either Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 or the latest Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 to create or maintain web sites efficiently - even with little or no past knowledge.

Why does the Dreamweaver template that I download look different from the actual site on the web server?

The Dreamweaver template embeds (via Server Side Include) University-wide brand elements such as the background image, the top header with the new URI logo and bottom footer with the new URI wordmark and tagline so the University can centrally maintain the overally look and feel of the URI websites. You'll only see the regions you need to edit. When you preview your pages or when you upload your website to the remote server, you will be able to see the embeded elements in a browser.
