TITLE:                                   Assistant Vice President, Research Administration

 

DIVISION:                            Research and Economic Development

 

REPORTS TO:                      Vice President Research and Economic Development

 

GRADE:                                 18                   

 

SUPERVISES:                       Professional, technical, administrative, and clerical support staff

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

   

Work directly with faculty to foster and support research and other creative scholarly activity across all of the institution’s academic disciplines in support of the research mission of the University. Oversight of ongoing research administration including faculty assistance in proposal and program development, sponsored program administration (pre- and post-award), and research compliance.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

 

Serve as a member of the senior leadership team of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development.

 

Assist the Vice President for Research and Economic Development in crafting the long-term vision and strategic plan for the Division of Research and Economic Development as set forth in the Institution’s Strategic Plan 2006-09.

 

Oversight of the Office of Research Development and the Office of Research Compliance.

 

Assist in the merger of the Office of Sponsored Projects Review (pre-award) and the Office of Grants and Contracts Accounting (post-award) to form the new Office of Sponsored Programs Administration.

 

Oversight of the newly formed Office of Sponsored Programs Administration.

 

Assist in the full-implementation of PeopleSoft in Sponsored Programs Administration.

 

Assist in the development of a state-wide Office of Rhode Island EPSCoR/IDeA Programs.

 

Administer internal research awards.

 

Ex-officio member to the URI Counsel for Research and the URI Intellectual Property Committee.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Assist the Vice President for Research and Economic Development on other matters as required.

 

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT: 

 

Personal computers and printers; word processing, database management and spreadsheet software.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

           

This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Earned doctorate from an accredited institution; strong scholarly record of accomplishments qualifying for tenure in a URI academic department; an established record of external funding, preferably from federal agencies and/or industry, in support of their own scholarly research; experience with and/or full understanding of inter- and multi-disciplinary collaborative research initiatives; experience with and/or full understanding of federal research administration; understanding of federal, state, and institutional policies that bear on research conduct, administration, and compliance and the ability to communicate these policies and mandates to researchers and staff; demonstrated ability to work on multiple, complex transactions; effective administrative experience in a higher education setting including a record of demonstrated leadership, management, and organizational skills; strong oral and written skills; exceptional interpersonal skills.
