Most benefits are available when you are newly hired or during the annual open enrollment. However, certain qualifying events allow employees to make changes to their medical, dental and vision insurance elections during the year.
For a list of qualifying events please read the State of Rhode Island Benefits Bulletin on Status Change Rules.
Please note that you must wait until the next annual open enrollment if you miss the time frame to notify Human Resources of the status change.
To add a newborn or adopted child you must notify Human Resources within 30 days of birth or adoption by providing the child's information and a copy of either the hospital discharge paper, or the court adoption order. Do not wait for a birth certificate because you will miss the 30 day deadline.
Contact Employee Benefits at 874-9054 within 30 days or if you have any questions.
The Mandatory Insurer Reporting Law requires group health plan insurers and administrators to report social security numbers for all covered dependents. It is vital that you call HR Benefits at 874-9054 when you receive the social security number of your newborn or adopted child.
To add a new spouse to your health coverage you must notify Human Resources within 60 days by providing a copy of the marriage certificate. Do not wait until you receive the official State Marriage Certificate or you may miss the 60 day deadline. If your new spouse needs health coverage the sooner you come in to add your spouse the quicker coverage can begin.
