                                                               Position Description        

This is a calendar-year, tenure-track faculty position with 8 months of salary support per year.     

TITLE:                         Assistant or Associate Professor (Marine Chemistry)               

Department:                     Graduate School of Oceanography

BASIC FUNCTION: 

Establish and carry out an externally funded research program that reflects a high level of scholarship, teach graduate courses in area of expertise, and mentor graduate students and undergraduates in GSO-related programs. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Required:  Ph.D. or equivalent in oceanography, chemistry, or a related field; demonstrated ability to address interdisciplinary topics in marine science.  Preference will be given to applicants who focus on biogeochemical processes. For appointment at the Assistant Professor rank, we require:  (1) demonstrated potential for, or record of, independently funded research as shown by publications, previously submitted scientific research proposals, presentations at national and international scientific meetings, active external funding, honors and awards; (2) ability to advise graduate students and to teach graduate courses in applicant’s area of expertise; and (3) research and teaching strengths that complement existing strengths at GSO and in affiliated departments. For appointment at the rank of Associate Professor, the candidate must meet the above criteria and also demonstrate a strong record of independent funded research and publication with international recognition.  At either rank, preference may be given to applicants that meet one or more of the following criteria:  (1) a successful record of publications and/or funded research; (2) teaching experience; (3) post-doctoral research experience; and/or (4) demonstrated potential for developing an ocean-going research program.
