TITLE:                            Clinical Counselor 

DIVISION:                    Student Development (Counseling Center) 

REPORTS TO:             Director, Counseling 

GRADE:                         13 

SUPERVISES:             Graduate assistants and interns 

BASIC FUNCTION: 

Provide individual and group counseling and psychotherapy for students experiencing psychological, psychosocial, and developmental difficulties; develop and implement outreach programs to promote mental health and human development; provide consultation with students, faculty, and administration. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Provide counseling and psychotherapy to students; conduct intake interviews and other activities related to quality direct service. 

Design and implement preventative and outreach programs aimed at meeting the typical developmental and clinical needs of students. 

Serve as a consultant to various persons and agencies within the campus community on matters of broad developmental and mental health concerns. 

Provide targeted assistance to underrepresented or underserved members of the campus community (e.g., trauma survivors, GLBT, etc.) 

Assist with upgrading the helping skills of students, faculty, and staff who function in a variety of helping roles. 

Assist with the training and supervision of graduate students from various helping disciplines who intern at the Counseling Center. 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Perform other duties as required. 

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT: 

Must be licensed or license-eligible in the State of Rhode Island. Familiarity with computer software (e.g., MSWord, Excel, etc.) 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: 

This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Required: An earned master's degree in counseling, clinical psychology or related field; at least four years of experience in a clinical setting. Experience must include counseling, psychotherapy, and related services including demonstrated experience and skill in providing counseling assistance to individuals and groups, and development of preventive and outreach programs. Also required: demonstrated knowledge of individual pathology and normal developmental challenges. Must be an outstanding clinician with exceptional written and verbal skills and strong interpersonal skills. Must be able to organize, coordinate and supervise support staff. Must be licensed or license-eligible in Rhode Island. Preferred: Counseling experience in a higher education setting; demonstrated experience with diverse, underrepresented or underserved populations (e.g., trauma survivors, GLBT community).

TITLE:                            University Psychologist 

DIVISION:                    Student Development 

REPORTS TO:             Director, Counseling Center 

GRADE:                         14 

SUPERVISES:              Professional, technical and clerical support staff 

BASIC FUNCTION: 

Provide individual and group counseling and psychotherapy for students experiencing psychological, psychosocial, and developmental difficulties; develop and implement outreach programs to promote mental health and human development; provide consultation with students, faculty, and administration; provide assessments, clinical supervision of pre-doctoral trainees and post-doctoral fellows, and participate in departmental research. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Assess the causes and seriousness of a broad range of problems presented by students experiencing psychological and psycho-social difficulties.  Develop plans to assist students in dealing with these difficulties. 

Provide counseling and therapy assistance in the form of individual and/or group services directly to the college community. 

Assist severely troubled students who are in need of psychiatric consultation, medication, hospitalization, and/or with the management of life threatening situations. 

Develop and implement outreach programs for prevention of dysfunction. 

Provide consultative assistance to various persons and agencies within the campus community. 

Develop in-service counseling and psychotherapy support programs. 

Assist with the training and supervision of graduate students from the various helping disciplines who intern at the Counseling Center.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Supervise, train and teach other professionals and trainees in assessment, counseling, therapy, program development, etc. 

Evaluate and research the need for and effectiveness of counseling/therapy and developmental programs. 

Perform other duties as required. 

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT: 

Must be licensed or license-eligible in the State of Rhode Island, and maintain such licensure.

Also required: Demonstrated knowledge of individual pathology and normal developmental challenges. Must be an outstanding clinician with exceptional written and verbal skills and strong interpersonal skills. Must be able to organize, coordinate and supervise support staff. Must be licensed or license-eligible in Rhode Island. Preferred: Experience in supervision of staff and professionals in training; experience with crisis management and evaluation of serious psychopathology; demonstrated experience with underrepresented or underserved populations.
