TITLE: Marine Research Specialist I
DIVISION: Academic Affairs (
REPORTS TO:
GRADE: 5
SUPERVISES: Undergraduate and graduate
level students; Rhode Island Sea Grant Fellows and/or Rhode Island Sea Grant
Interns
BASIC FUNCTIONS:
Conduct independent research and compose formal communications in support of the Rhode Island Sea Grant College program. Assist in developing a strategic education program for Rhode Island Sea Grant.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work with marine researchers and outreach specialists in the research and preparation of materials that convey scientific information to nonscientists.
Collect, process, monitor, and analyze Sea Grant research and outreach outputs for dissemination.
Conduct research and market analysis in support of outreach, education, and information dissemination activities related to Sea Grant programs. Assist in the design and execution of communications and education strategies and products.
Research and prepare content for the Rhode Island Sea Grant web site, magazine, e-newsletter, and other outlets.
Research effective and innovative methods of communication and assist in their implementation.
Assist in research writing, web development, event planning, and other activities associated with Rhode Island Sea Grant efforts.
Engage in collaborative efforts with Sea Grant programs and others, as appropriate.
Work with URI and other Rhode Island-based university staff and faculty in developing internship and fellowship opportunities at graduate and undergraduate levels.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist in the recruitment of students to internships and fellowships, and act as liaison to host universities.
May represent Rhode Island Sea Grant at meetings and conferences as appropriate.
Assist Principal Investigators in performing background
research for grant proposals.
Travel occasionally via commercial air carrier service to attend
meetings/conferences.
Attend weekend and/or evening events as required.
Perform all additional duties as assigned by the Rhode
Island Sea Grant Assistant Director and/or Communications Manager.
LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
Personal computers, printers, scanners, database,
spreadsheet, web design, word processing, and document layout software. Must possess
and keep a valid driver’s license.
ENVIRONMENTAL
CONDITIONS:
This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism,
Public Relations/Communications or Science with at least one (1) year of experience
in research, outreach and/or public education endeavors required. Must
be able to work independently and have the ability to translate complex marine
science, and other related disciplines, to the general public and other lay
audiences. Must be able to organize, coordinate and supervise student staff and
interns. Must be able to give public presentations to both
small and large audiences. Must have excellent
interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively interact with Rhode Island
Sea Grant staff, university personnel and other academics from varying
institutions, students of all academic levels and the public at large. Must
have demonstrated writing ability, be proficient with Microsoft Office software
programs, and familiar with Adobe Acrobat Pro. Occasional, short-term
(overnight) travel via commercial air carrier required. Familiarity/previous
experience with Sea Grant preferred.
