TITLE:                                Academic Advisor

 

DIVISION:                         Academic Affairs (University College)

 

REPORTS TO:                Associate Dean, University College

 

GRADE:                            10

 

SUPERVISES:                 Graduate Assistant(s)

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

 

Provide leadership in developing programs for and working with University College students who are undecided about their choice of major, and those in need of general academic and career advising.  Coordinate peer mentors and other programs essential to academic services.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Assist University College students who have not yet selected a major by advising them individually and in groups.

 

Work with and assist faculty who advise students.

 

Work with online student records system.

 

Supplement the work of Career Services by creating workshops for University College students undecided about their choice of major and by developing other appropriate activities.

 

Assist Associate Dean in routine functions at University College.

 

Develop an effective approach to assist students unable to enter the field of study initially selected.

 

Work with student peer mentors who serve University College students and advisors.

 

Support program development in University College as assigned by Associate Dean.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Assist the college in other areas as needs arise.

 

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

 

Personal computers and printers; word processing, database management and spreadsheet software.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

 

This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:  Master's degree, preferably in student personnel in higher education and counseling (or a comparable program); experience or training in academic advising or career counseling and a minimum of two years of experience in higher education working with students (may include experience gained during graduate training); evidence of excellent skills in writing, speaking, and working with students. Preferred:  Experience with on-line information, presentation technology and student records systems.

Salary Range: $45,745-$57,232
